How does one find out what the minimum distnace that a scope will focus at?  I've looked at a few manufactur sites at specific models and I didn't see that information.  Is there a "rule of thumb" or do you find a scope that you'd like and call the manufacturer and ask.

As usual .... Thanks

The min. distance a scope focus will depend on the magnification.  Consider a variable will have it's closet focus at the lowest power. Consider two or more manufac. with the same power range, will still have their closet focus at the lowest power sitting, but may not be the same across the board between manufacturers. As a rule of thumb I have found Zeiss, Leo, and Nikon to focus closer than their stated AO's. The min. focus also depends alot on the diopter setting of the rear. A plus setting will focus closer as a machine, but if the observer is far-sighted the picture will appear to be out of focus. This is why manufac. are reluctant about publishing focus data.

The scope catelogues published by the manufacturer have the minimum focus distance listed in the back of the book for each model they make. Some scopes are more forgiving than others about what is in focus up close. My Super Sniper 20X will focus to about 10 meters but not much is in focus front to back. My Leupold Tacticals focus from 50 or 75 meters out depending on which one and they mean long range as anything closer is definately out of focus. I looked at a Burris tactical which is supposed to focus from 50 out but found objects as close as 10 meters to be clear and sharp.  It's a visual thing put your eye behind it and see for yourself.
