I've been shooting bolt action rifles for a long time hunting. I recently purchased a 700 SPS Tactical. I would like to put a mildot on it. I've never shot mildot scopes, but it is something I am interested in learning.

Any reccomendations for around $500?

Are you wanting to learn Mil-Dot ranging?
IF thats the case then this

or spend a bit more and get this (worth it to have the FFP reticle)  You can always sell the mount that it comes with for a buck fifty or so.

Plus the 3-9 is better glass and the turrets match the reticle which helps A LOT!

I'd do the 3-9, great range for most applications - and a great buy at $599.

My first few attempts at making a mil-dot starter didn't turn out so good, so go with these recommendations:
