    Posted: May/07/2006 at 21:52

I did some pretty heavy studying of the mil-dot.com page, good page by the way and I like the simulator, but here's my question:

Knowing how to calculate the range using the dots on the crosshairs with the equations was easy, but....in the sim. that was for a .308 and so on, I recently purchased the SS10X42 for my 22-250, I assume that I need to find the ballistics for the type of charge and ball that I am using to shoot in order to successfully calculate range and windage, right?  I am a little confused on what I need to do.  I have NO experience using a tactical scope, and if anyone can point me in the right direction on some of the information that I need to get that would be greatly appreciated.  Sorry for the dumb question but i had to ask...

Thank you

Looking forward to gettin my new SS tomorrow!!

U really answered your question-- to apply your ranging reticle as a ballistic reticle get the dope on your setup (bullet BC, reticle stadia subtension-3.6 inch per hundred yd. or 3.44 MOA for each dot to dot subtension, mv, sight height above bore, etc.), plug it into the ballistics program, calculate your zeros (both windage trajectory as well as vertical trajectory), check it at the range, and make adjustments to mv for any discrepancies, recheck occasionally, and your set.

How do you measure the sight height?

I think I found a pretty decent site that allows me to plug in my values to get a ballistics chart if anyone wants to check it out the address is Sub-MOA.com.  Click on exterrior ballistics on the first page and then you'll just have to play around with the ballistics site.

Thanks sscoyote for the information, very useful.

Anyone check out that site yet?  Just like to see what people think of it.

You do need to know the ballistics of the particular cartridge you are using. I have  a PACT professional Chrono which will tell you about everything you need to know after you have a string of shots in its memory. I also have the Sierra Infinity Suite program that gives me any other info I might want to know

it is not a very good site for this- the best is JBM ballistic and beartooth bullets- also look at stevespages. all except JBM use numerical integration which uses 4th order runge-kutta and will print out the drop card for you (in addition to windage and motion o the target),  None use Radau optimization type processes the best, and the other  causes numerical differences at the 1000 yd. especially when dealing with SMOA and milMOA.m  Infinity sierra uses the second order differential equations for point mass, and up to six degrees of freedom, in addition it gives the cone of fire, (although they call it something else) given in the 4th edition, if you are familiar with Matlab or MathCad it is very easy to set these up  and obtain a 3-dimensional graph of the bullet as it is affected by wind and the lead necessary for moving targets.

Yotecaller-- sight height above bore is exactly what it says, just measure as accurately as possible from the bore centerline to the scope body's centerline. Remember this is just gona give you a computer model that's probably not gonna be perfect. Once you shoot the rig at the computer's calculated stadia zeros, if there's discrepancies you need to measure them, and recalculate the drop chart by changing muzzle velocity and/or BC until u get a better trajectory-reticle fit.
