Meopta Meostar R1 3-10x50 or Kahles Helia CL 2-7x36? Once again lowlight is the key. I came into some money right before I was about to buy a Zeiss conquest 3-9x40. I appreciate y'all talking me through the fine tuning process on my decision here.

just curious, why are you comparing a 50mm objective to a 36mm one? I have a CL 3-10X50 and I would take it over any Meopta. But I'm a little biased, I think Meopta's eye relief is too short so I haven't looked thru any.

Well I'm going on what I can afford. I get the impression that both are nicer then the conquest I was about to buy and I found both at the same price. If glass quality is more important than diameter then I'm wondering if the Kahles is better to the point where their 36mm is still brighter? I want to be able to hunt during full moon nights.
Also, if I can get the same performance without having to put a huge scope on my rifle I would prefer that so a tie in low light ability would steer me towards the smaller scope. Its going on a 270 and shots past 300 yards are very rare so I think that 7power scope would suffice. |

Don't think you'll be able to use 7 power on the 36mm objective at night... that would give you an exit pupil of 36/7=5.1. Not sure 5.1 is enough for moon light. The 50 would give you 50/7=7.14. You WILL see a difference at 7 power if all other things are equal. To get a 7mm exit pupil with the Kahles 36mm, you would need to set the power ring at 5x.
I'm not familar enough with the Meopta's to say if their glass/coatings are better, worse or the same as the Kahles. What is your price range?

Have no experience with Kahles, but have 2 3-10 R1s. Moonlite, not full, and I can count points at 150 yd. In fact here it could cause some problems with shooting afetr hours. Scope is heavy and bulky, and some complain eyerelief is short, but one is on a 300WSM and has caused me no grief, Whereas some other better thought of scopes have given me cresent carresses. The heavy and bulky= built like atank, adjustments are dead on w/o backlash and the lowlite vision is best at 10 power for detail. Im pushin 66 and vision was better in memory, but I still see more with the Meopta than lotsa folks with other scopes.. only my $0.02

I just realized that I'm going to need new rings for this. The local shop sells Leopold, does anyone know whether I can get away with medium height rings for the 50mm?

I think I have medium Leupold style rings on my BAR with a 50mm objective. I can not use scope covers though, not enough room.
