If you're going to shoot steel, and you like using MOA turrets, I'd get the HTR version (target knobs).  I'm sure it would be more than adequate for a .308 at 500 yds.  I personally have a 3-9x42 SS on my 7mmWSM specialty pistol, and I know it will do a good job out that far.  It will eventually have a 3-15 SS, but for now, with money being tight, the 3-9 is all I can manage.
