I have a Voure Arms Mauser 98 Military (sporterized) in 270 win.  My dad bought this rifle used for me when I started big game hunting 15 years ago. I wanted to go to a one piece base on it.  So I took off the two piece weaver bases that were on it, and bought a Leupy one piece standard dovetail base for it.

So here is the problem.  The front screw holes line up.  But the back one will not.  It is too far forward (there are three holes in the back).  Should I go back to a two piece base?  Or is there a way to correct this.  It seems whoever drilled the holes originally did not line up with the barrel.  So I either have to have a windage adjustable base, or use signature rings to get the scope in line.

I guess my main question is, is there a way to correct this problem?

That really depends on what was on it int he first place. As always the holes may or may not line up.  I assume on your action the charger slot was milled off, right?

There are a few different one piece bases for Mausers out there.  Some use a single hole in the rear bridge and some use two.  SInce I like to tinker with old rifles, I bought a drill press, so I can usualy redrill the holes myself.  If you want to try to match the existing holes, measure the exact hole spacing you have and call a few base makers to see if someone has a matching one-piece base.  I know EGW makes a variety of Picatinny one piece base for Mauser actions.  I am pretty sure they also sell them without any holes, so you can by one and fit to the existing holes in your receiver (I would probably do that, myslef).

Of course, if the old base work fine, it would probably be simpler to just put them onWink.

Was the "two-base" system not working?

The biggest problem is that the holes that are there are not in line with the barrel.  I had a two piece weaver style base on it.  But not being in line once the scope was mounted, depending on the scope, I would run out of windage to sight it in.  The rifle is pretty light, so I would like to keep a light weight scope on in (like the 4200 which is what I am trying to mount).  I figured if I had a windage adjustable base, I could use that windage, and burris sig rings to line the scope back up in line with the barrel and then use the scope windage for fine tuning.

I know I can get two peice bases that will work, I just want one that is windage adjustable.

I guess in stead of saying not in line with the barrel, I should say the holes were not tapped on the receiver centered.
