I'd like some opinions about the best scope to use with this rifle. I use Hornady Leveraction 325 grain rounds and would like something other than the iron sights....

Thanks!

I don't know what your budget is, but I would take agood hard look at the Trijicon Accupoint 1.25-4X24. Probably costs the same as you paid for your rifle but well worth it.

Is it a guide gun , XLR , or 1895 SS? Budget? Intended for deer, bear , whatever?

Whatever you get, don't go hog-wild on the magnification.

I have a 45/70 and it is topped with a fixed 4X.  A friend has one as well, his wears a 3-9.

There are MANY options - depending on mounting needs and budget (intended use is usually pretty cler; most people don't buy 45/70s for range queens.

....................I reco a straight tubed, no higher than 5x, lower powered variable, which offers very fast target acquisition or aiming speed, with the wider FOV`s. Your rifle is a quick handling, short to moderate range timber gun. For any hunting, 5X on the high end is more than enough for any 45-70 hunting distances.

Leupold VX2 1-4x20
Leupold VX3 1.5-5x20
Trijicon Accupoint 1.25x4
Weaver V3 1x3-20
There is also the lower powered variable Elite 4200 and Sightron.

Straight tubed, lower powered variable scopes have lower profiles, are generally lighter, have better FOV`s and are faster to the target than higher powered scopes with obj. bells.

I own the VX3 1.5-5x20, with the German #4 reticle, which I consider to be one of the best reticles for hunting. A very fast, both eyes open aiming scope.

I have two -- An XLR currently being cut down to 20 inches. It wears a Bushnell Elite 4200 1.5-6 --For me it is close to perfect in magnification and clarity , however just a bit big . My 1895SS wears a Leupold 2.5-8 . Right size, but I think a 1.5-5 or 1.75-6 ( or perhaps a 4200 1.24-4 Illum and swop that to the XLR and put the 4200 1.5-6 back on the 1895SS) with a thicker reticle would serve me better. I am with RC ,keep the magnification in the 1.5 up to 7X and that will be ideal .

installed 4200 after photo .

Win 94 XTR , checkered Walnut stock and Pentax Whitetails Unlimited 2-5 with the twilight plex reticle ( very quick to pick up ) It might have 30 rounds thru it total .. had to have one after the Winchester demise announcement --I wonder if FN/Winchester will bring back the 94 ?
