I'm new to scope mounting so please bear with me.

I've mounted a few scopes on 22 rifles with good results. A couple of Ruger 10/22, 10/22 Target, Marlin 882, and Remington 552. All scopes were assemble, bore sighted, and zeroed at 50 yards. All work fine.

Now I come to my latest rifle, a Marlin 336SS. I purchased two piece Weaver mounts and Quad Lock Weaver Rings. I assembled these and all appeared fine.

I placed the Bushnell 4200 3-9x40 scope on the rings and it fit perfectly. I alligned the reticle, and carefully tightened the screws on the quad locks gently in crosswise fashion.

When I went to bore sight the scope I found I ran out of windage adjustment before I got the reticle to the center.

I ran the windage adjustment from side to side to establish its maximum adjustments, centered the adjustment and tried again with the same results.

I reversed the mounts and reasssembled the scope as described above with similar results Except I ran ou of adjustment on the other side. IOW's I ran out of left adjustment with the mounts one way and ran out of right adjustment when I reversed the mounts.

I assumed I had a bad set of mounts so I purchased a set of see-thru Weaver mounts to test this theory, but the results were the same.

So I'm left with the conclusion the screw holes are not correct. Am I confused with this?

It is a brand new gun just purchased a week ago so It can be returned.

What other options do I have? Would a one piece mount with twist in rings thaat have a windage adjustment at the back work here? As I said I don't have any experience with this type of mount.

What do you think?

Thanks,

Gary

It doesn't sound to me that your rifle is drilled out of alignment. If it were, reversing the bases would probably not have caused you to run out of windage to the right, whereas you had run out to the left prior to reversing them. The 4200 is a good scope, if yours is new I would pretty much rule out scope problems at least for now.Examine the bases carefully for burrs or mis-aligned holes. Any flaws large enough to prevent you from getting on paper at 25 yards should be apparent to the eye. Same with the rings. Examine them closely in good light. Eyeball the receiver with the bases off. Double -check the base mounting screws to be sure they aren't bottoming out on you.

If all that checks out O.K. I would shoot the rifle from a sandbagged bench with iron sights to rule out rifle and shooter. If that pans out, bolt the whole mess back together and try again. BTW don't bother with a laser bore sighter. Set up a solid benchrest and start shooting at 25 yards at a small aiming point on a big, clean paper or cardboard backer. Good luck!
