Just bought a Marlin 1895g in 45-70...what do you think of a Leupold FX-II 4X? will it withstand the recoil? Will be used for mule deer and elk out to 175 yds.   Intend to mount it on "see through" rings....your thoughts?

if you mount a scope on a rifle like that i believe its a great idea to have see through rings although with a straight 4x scope you may never have an issue with animals being to close to shoot, as far as recoil goes it says leupold on the side it should be able to hold up to the moderate recoil of the 45-70 if it doesnt send it back.

You will have no problems.  I've used a Leupold on mine for some time and have nothing but good things to say about the combination.

I used these parts:

Leupold 2.5x28 Scout

XS Sighting Systems Scout Mount

Leupold Quick Release Low Rings

XS Sighting Systmes Ghost Ring Back Up Sights

Big fat nasty hogs mainly.  Here is a picture from a trail cam on my last deer lease in Archer City, Texas.

A fixed 4x has a lot going for it it is a bright scope with good exit eye pupil and plenty of internal adjustment. The fixed power would probably be less likely to break than a variable as it has no moving parts. A nice set of 8x binoculars and a rangefinder and you are set up. I'm not a big fan of the see through scope mounts I would like the scope closer to the barrel but to each their own. I can see Chris's scout set up with a 2.5x as being a very quick brush gun. I put an Aimpoint 9000L on a slug gun for a brush gun for deer and have really enjoyed the red dot for stalking deer  ---  for stand hunting I like a traditional 3-9  or higher variable optic. My 45-70 encore pistol has a 1x Burris which has held up very well to the extreme recoil so I like the idea of a fixed power scope for that gun.
