Check out the new March offering - a 5-40X56 (http://www.deon.co.jp/march/March-FX.htm). Among other things, they tout "...the highest magnification ratio in the FFP (first focal plane) configuration rifle scope made to date." That's more or less true, since the only other scope I know of that has a 1:8 erector ratio is the newer version of the Premier 1-8 and that hasn't really been seen yet AFAIK. I'd speculate that solving the problems related to high erector ratios are easier at higher magnifications than they are at 1X. In other words, creating a scope capable of working well from 1/1.1-8 would seem harder to achieve.

Scopes like these are basically an engineering curiosity to me. I've already learned through experience that the 3-15 mag range is ideal for my shooting and that a clear view (i.e. no tunneling) at the low end matters. I can see where at 40X you might really want .05 mil clicks, that would make the scope more of a varminting model than a tactical one.

Technically, IOR is already out with a 1-10x26 scope that has a FFP reticle (together with an SFP one), so this particualr March scope is not the highest ratio.

However, when they came out with a 3-24x42 version (which I have), it was the highest magnification ratio.

As far as the knobs go, I think it was a mistake to go with 5 mrad per turn on this scope.

What is the cost going to be on a scope like that.  And I would think it better be a darn bright day even with good glass to use 40x effectively.

I would expect it to cost in the neighborhood of $3k.

As far as performance at 40x goes, you are right the conditions would have ot be quite favourable for 40x magnification to be useful.  However, that goes for any scope with magnification that high.

At the same exit pupil, I found March scopes to be optically as good as anything else I have seen.  Their designs tend to favor resolution over contrast slightly, but that is really a matter of preference.   They definitely agree well with my eyes.

Quick update: I should be able to get my hands on a 4-50x56 March shortly after SHOT.

I'll let you know how it goes.
