Spotted these about 350-400 yards away and several hundred feet below us in Glacier National Park last week. I wouldn't have minded a hundred yards closer but that's all. We got good views through 8X bins and I managed a few decent shots with a 20X optical zoom camera (this image is cropped):

Wow.  Speechless...

I don't want to start anything here with this comment, but why would someone want to shoot such a magnificent animal.

I heard they had a camper at Yellowstone NP killed by a grizzly sow a couple of days ago.

Tragic. The guy was hiking with his wife along a trail and encountered a sow with her cubs. Believe me, such an occurrence was always in the back of my mind when we were hiking in Glacier. Both my wife and I were armed with bear spray (and have actually practiced with an old can of it). We also made sure we all stuck together within 30 feet of each other and stayed noisy. Still, it could happen and I know I'd be crapping my pants while trying to actually spray an enraged grizzly. Those folks, like many I see along the trails, didn't have anything to protect them.

While it's tempting to think packing a .44 would be the best protection, the stats say otherwise. Bear spray has proven a more effective deterrent. A pretty extensive study showed it was 92% effective vs. 67% for firearms. You might well mortally wound the bear, but before it dies it could do you a ton of damage. In some circumstances, I've carried both. You can't, for instance, easily use bear spray inside a tent.
