First time poster.

I am looking for a scope with First Focal Plane and a mil-dot style reticle. (I don't like tactical win/elev knobs) This will be going on a .300 Win Mag and I am concerned about the scope lasting/holding zero through heavy recoil.

Question:
Does anyone have any experience with these scopes or have any info on how well they withstand magnum calipers?

I have been looking at:
http://swfa.com/Weaver-4-20x50-Tactical-30mm-Rifle-Scope-P40579.aspx
http://swfa.com/Vortex-4-16x50-Viper-PST-30mm-Rifle-Scope-P44561.aspx

Background:
Have an old Weaver scope, very clear and sharp, clean design no tactical knobs, fixed power.
I have looked through the vortex Viper (except it had a SFP) it was good but not excellent. Glass was good  but didnt care for the design to much. Have shot a new .300 win mag with a new Vortex Diamondback. So new that it reliability has not been tested.

Have you looked at the Super Sniper 3-9x42?  I believe it has the FFP and mil dot.  Some of the members have them.  I'm sure they can provide some insight.

I have the SS 3-9 on my 300 win mag currently.  Stuck it on there while I used the SS 5-20 that normally rides it on the Blaser to test.  The SS 3-9 is, IMO, the best 3-9 out there for all around use.  The turrets don't move when you don't want them too but if you wanted to dial in you could, easily.  The reticle matches the adjustments, Mil/Mil.  The glass is superb for the money.  They are tough as nails, and have proven reliable and repeatable.

Thanks for the info on the SS I'll have to remember that they come highly recommended by their sponsors. Wink  I looked at them but I wasn't sure on their quality and I would like more power than the 3-9 and the  5-20 one is out of my price range.

Anyone know of the durability of the Weaver?

Weaver has been through a number of owners and experienced a number of "ups and downs" in quality.  You stand about equal chance of getting a good one or a bad one... perhaps leaning a little more toward probability of good these days.
Interesting that you don't like tactical style knobs and yet both the scopes you are considering... have them...
The Vortex Viper PST has gotten some pretty good press, though it has not been around long enough to determine its durability.

Given the choice, I would select NEITHER of the two you mention.  I kind of like the IOR 2.5-10, but that's me.  It will take you out to 1000m pretty handily, if that's where you are going.  The MP-8 reticle is pretty nice.

I would also check the samplelist.

I didn't think it was FFP which was on the OP's spec list.

I finally got a  replay back from Weaver.
