Help please.  I'm not to knowledgable about used rifle market, but came across one that seems to be a bargain.

Add reads: Ruger M77 Mark 2 Stainless .308, heavy barrel, target trigger, laminated wood stock.

What does "target trigger" mean?  Is "heavy barrel" a Ruger option by name, or is the seller giving opinion.

Other than obvious barrel inspection, what should I look for?  Anything about this model I need to know?

Oh, asking price is $400 and add states "like new"

All help is appreciated

...............................................................Target trigger means that the trigger pull is probably around 2 lbs. or less, which is designed for more accurate target shooting. It either came from Ruger that way or the original trigger was replaced with a new more crispy trigger.............................This rifle you describe, appears to be a target/varmit bench rifle, with a heavier barrel from the factory. More than likely, it was an option from Ruger..................If possible, get the serial # off the rifle, then go to the Ruger website and do a search to find the date of manufacture!..........Also! Is the seller the original owner? If so, ask to see the original paperwork which would also verify within a year or two the date of manufacture........................Call a couple of gun stores and give them the description. Most of not all gun stores will have a used rifle guide or book values for used guns. There are levels of rifle value based the condition of the rifle; 100%, 95%, 90% and so on! Some members here may have that book!.............You need to determine the rifle`s condition; stock, bore, stainless, etc. and then determine book value based on that condition! The owner may ask $400, but it may be worth more, OR it can also be worth less!....To make sure you are getting a fair deal, you need to have all of your ducks lined up beforehand............Be smart! But be smart like a fox!Wink

target in the same sentence as ruger is almost an oxymoron- but usually target and varmit guns have been "shot out" the main reason they are for sale in the first place, the exception is ruger which may not have meet the owners accuracy expectations and could be almost new. ruger made some target 308 in the 80's with the safety on the top, and the older style triggers that could be reworked to a very nice let off.

I know, I have one. But it is good enough for it's intended purpose of night time predator hunting, which is inside of 150 yds.

Well................ Thanks all for the replies.  I saw the add last night.  When I called this morning, it was already gone.   Soooooooooooo - for peace of mind, I'll have to assume it was a beat up, runned over, drug through the pond piece of junk.   Right...
Thanks
