       I just recently bought a loaded M1A and I am looking to scope it out.  I know I still want to be able to use  the iron sights with it, so I would need a scope where the objective lens wouldn't get in my way. I would probably mount it on a gen. 3 Springfield mount. I would say the max range I would be shooting at would be around 600yrds with most of my shooting done in the 300yrd and under range. I have around $400 to $500 to spend on the scope. I would spend more but I have some other toys I want to buy before the election at the end of the year. Just in case.

   I will be using it for target practice and possibly medium size game. A scope that has a eye relief around 6 would be nice as well. I would also like to have 1/4 or 1/2 moa adjustments with audible clicks.  I haven't decided between fixed or variable power. I don't think I would need something with a ton of magnification on it. I also don't have any brand loyalties. I have read other suggestions on here and have been looking at those as well. I though I would try to give as much info about what I was going to be using it for and what I wanted to get the best scope for me. I would appreciate the help greatly.

The pitfalls of scoping an M1A............oh gawd where to start.

The gen anything springfield mount is at best  worthless trash.  Spend money on the aluminum Sadlak, it's bullet proof and holds zero.

Get QD rings, the cross bolts on most rings will block the sight tunnel on lmost any mount,
or use badger/leupole/ior and carry a wrench.  Optic sight, mounted, open sight, optic dismounted.
The M1A stock doesn't just suck for  optics use, it's darn near treasonable.  Your cheek weld is going to be a jaw weld and things get real wobbly, even from a bench.  Go prone and it's a disaster.  It sorta works from kneeling/sitting/offhand( the head upright positions) but sorta is generous.  You can add a cheekpiece to the stock, but then the butt is tucked under your arm and we're back to it sucks enough to start a Harley through the exhuast system.

Having said all that;
Sadlak aluminum mount
IOR low rings they are the lowest 30mm ring available.
SUper Sniper scope 1st choice ( cost vs features)
IOR 10x42 second choice 1/2 moa adjustments on some models
Leupole MkIV M3 3rd choice.  Crappy scope that the M1A will eat alive but it will go about 3,000 rounds between overhaul and has 1 moa adjustments.  With 175 grain bullets and the 30/06 bdc  you get 100 to 1150 yards with a single turn of the dial.

If you have the spare change, send the rifle to Springfield.  They'll send it back in 30 days wearing a devcon bedded M21 adjustable wood stock that makes the M1A like shooting a bolt rifle.  Cost is $650.00 shipped.  Makes scope use an absolute dream and is a real aid to accuracy in any shooting position.

Very good Mike.
Let me also add another option. An aimpoint will work fairly well on these as cheekweld is relatively unimportant with an Aimpoint. The Sadlak base will give the traditonal scope mounting position or the same mount that attaches to the barrel mid barrel and is found on the SOCOM M1a is available and a gunsmith can order it from Springfield and install it giving you a scout scope type base that is low profile. The scout scope base can of course be used with extended eye relief scout scope like the ones make by Leupold and Burris etc they are not high powered optics but they do come on target relatively fast and give you a lower profile optic where most mounts are so high up in the air as to be usless without changing the stock.

Thanks for the info guys. I have good things about the super sniper and the Sadlack mount. I will probably go with them. If I can't use the irons its not that big a deal anyway. I appreciate the replies.
