I just signed up for the forum thinking someone may be able to help me. I have a custom rifle with a prefix A Lyman Alaskan and could use more eye relief. Somewhere in the back of my memory I thought that the A prefix scopes had less eye relief (to improve some other criteria) than earlier models. Can anyone help me here? Thanks, Ed

Does this scope have the adjustment covers? In 1941 they went to the coverd  and called it the All Weather. What are you wanting done with this scope. It was good in its day but that is not saying much compaired to todays standards. Most of the value in the Alaskans is collector value, and not the optical quality.

Yes it has the covers. To the best of my knowledge the A prefix scopes were the last Lyman Alaskans. My rifle has custom mounts and rings and thus need to be maintained. However when I put the scope in the optimal position the front end of the tube is about an 1/8th of an inch from coming out of the front ring. When I put the scope forward and position in out about 3/8's which by the way looks perfect then the eye relief isn't right. The previous owner said he changed out the scope because the crosshair was broken and he thought this earlier Alaskan had a great deal more eye relief. I hate to buy the scope an older scope without knowing the facts but I'm pretty sure I've heard this same thing years ago.

If the reticle is broken it will be near impossible to find any parts for a scope of that age.  I am not going to be of any help to you. It sounds as if you need to search for a longer scope like what the rings were originally made for. The best I can do is wish you good luck.

Gosh, I think I've done a terrible job explaining my question. In a nut-shell I'm asking if earlier Lyman Alaskans had longer eye reliefs than Prefix A Alaskans did. I vaguely recall this and don't want to buy another scope unless I know this is so solving my problem. If it is, I will then purchase one happily as there are several available. Sorry my earlier post must have been confusing.

I have no help, but I'm going to ask for a pic of the rig all the same.

I just looked through a Lyman All-Weather today.  Eye relief was tight.  Google Early Lyman scopes....Stare
