New to Opticstalk... and I would appreciate some help.  I have a older Lyman "Alaskan" scope It isa 2.5 power unit with very, very fine crosshairs suppoerting a dot.  The serial number is in the 39,000 range.  I am looking for some back ground or history of the scope.  Wondering when it was built and what the approximate of the scope is.  Friend wants to buy for $100.00.

Shooy Straight...

If your Lyman is in nice shape it is probably worth more than that as a 'collector', unless you just wanted to sell it to your friend.

The Alaskans came out in 1939.  If your adjustments have a cap on them then that means that it was made after 1944.  Lee dots were available in the fifties from Lyman, but someone could have had a Lee dot put in earlier.

Nice old scopes.  I would just keep it and put it under glass with the old film cameras---or, mount it up on a old rifle just for old time's sake.

On the history part, 2.5x Lyman Alaskan scopes saw some US military use in WWII & Korea.
With a crosshair reticle it was designated M73, or with the addition of sunshade & rubber eye shield M81.  Configured like the M81 but with a post reticle it was designated M82.  They were issued on M1C and M1D sniper rifles, and as replacement scopes on M1903-A4 sniper rifles.
