Have a M4 upper on my Rock River that came with a Dominator 2 rear sight which I am taking off to put on a conventional scope mount.

That means in addition to a 1" scope mount, I will also need replacement rear sights.  I have the RRA front flip A2 sight so that end is taken care of, but don't know what rear sight I should get.

If I had gotten a rear sight from RR, they would have provided the A.R.M.S. #40L.

I have heard about the Magpul, Troy, etc.

Thanks for your suggestions!

Lew

I run the cheap 'ol YHM rear site.

Unless I were using my AR for a "duty weapon", which I don't, I really don't have any use for one of the Gucci flip up sites, like the Troy. (I concede the fact that the Troy is better than YHM.)  Wink

I keep it on when I run my Aimpoint T1, but when I put a scope on, I just take the site off.
I've tried leaving this rear site on and mounting a scope, but it scrapes.
When I put the site back on, it usually is REALLY close to dead nuts on target.

That's a pretty decent back up site.

Unless I am missing something, the scope and the sight are quite aways a part.  Isn't the concept of the low profile is to have it's top to be under the scope.  Maybe your talking about scraping your chin on it?  The ones I have seen, with a glass scope, are right behind it, ahead of the pupil distance?

Thanks!

Yikes, that is back a ways.  Should it have been mounted on a cantilever style mount?  I have a hard time getting my eye down to the sight line as it is...  Is that one of those Nikon scopes?  Perhaps the Team Primos I am trying to get more info on?

Thanks!

It's the new Monarch. The Primos is the old style Monarch.

Thanks, thought I recognized it as a Nikon.

Is there enough rise on the Burris PEPR mount?  It looks like you have the Nikon on a riser.  I am guessing your rings with the rise make it about the height of the Burris with a rise built in?

BTW, SWFA is WAY backordered on the Burris, so I was unable to buy one with the scope.  I am shopping now for one and finding one hasn't been easy.

Thanks!

Here is the SWFA SSALT mount.  Very similar to the burris.  It is a 3-9x 4200 mounted in it.  IIRC there was barely enough room to put my YHM sight that is just like cheaptricks behind it, but what is the point if you have a mount that is bolted on.  If I had a quick release LaRue or something it would be different.

Troy and Magpul are both good sights. I use the Troy and have been more than happy with it. The Magpul is pretty no frills and will work just fine for most me thinks. I'd would wait and get the newer Gen 2 Magpul as it's supposed to be of a lower profile allowing more mounting and optics options.

Supertool has a point.  Unless your gonna be using a quick detach, irons sights won't really be an issue.  You will not use them.

Hiya...

I guess I wasn't clear about something, and perhaps I don't need what I thought I would need.

1.  My carbine came with the RRA Dominator 2 iron sight with the EOTech rail.  Since I won't be using the EOTech rail, I will be taking off the sight that is on there now.

2.  I will be needing an iron sight for an Appleseed class I am hoping to take in a couple weeks.  I will still have my Dominator and can use it for the class, but having a scope won't mean I will never need an iron sight again.

3.  What might change in my rationale is the need for both to be on the carbine at the same time.  My idea was to have a low profile flip rear sight that could stay on the gun and if my scope was to get damaged or I wanted to practice with an iron sight, I would have one on the gun.  If I was going to take off the scope, I could put a regular A2 sight on at the same time.

I do want an iron sight, and I won't have one when I sell the Dominator.  I just need to rethink whether I need a flip sight or not if I won't have it on the gun with the scope.  I will need an iron sight when the scope is taken off, damaged or not.

In scopes I understand spending more to get better glass, but just how much difference can there be between a $150 iron sight and a $20 iron sight?  We are talking about a piece of metal with a hole in it.  I am over simplifying, but it is hard for me to justify a ARMS, G&G, or even a Troy when iron sights (flip or not) can be bought for a fraction of the cost.

The MARFLR is $22, ProMag at $39, Leapers at $40, the Magpul at $56 and another ProMag at $60.  Then we have a YHM at $74.  I didn't write down the Troy, but it is somewhere in that range too.

I am trying to understand why any of the above wouldn't work as well for me as those costing 2-7X as much?

Thanks!

Thanks!

I would get a fold down just so you know that your zero is not going to be different when you take your scope/mount off.
