Hello folks,

I am in the throws of scope indecision and would like some help from folks who have used the scopes I am considering.

Background and usage:  I punch paper for fun and to hone my skills, but this will be a deer hunting scope.  My current rig is a CZ550 full stock in 30-06 with a Leupold VX3 1.5-5x20 illuminated duplex.  I just got a deal on a Ruger #1 in 25-06 and it needs a scope.  Last season, I had to pass up an early morning foggy shot with no time pressure because I could not get enough light into my eyeball (yes, scope was set for 7mm exit pupil).  I would like to keep things at about $400.  I have killed all my deer from 25-150 yards out in the Pacific Northwest.

I like the views through the VX3 1.7-6 and 2.5-8, but I am unhappy with the exit pupil size range.  Given that context, I would like opinions and advice on the following two scopes for  the Ruger #1.

Nikon 1.5-6x42 Monarch Gold:

I would have to to wait for another one to show up on the samplelist (the “sold” one is still there taunting me) if I want it for $400.  Nikon has nice information about reticle “size” at different magnifications.

Zeiss 1.8-5.5x38 Conquest:

I can get this one from SWFA for $400 new.  I can not find any information about reticle apparent size at different magnifications.  There is one recent optictalk thread questioning quality, but the SWFA resolution was swift and satisfactory.

One more thing: If anyone has experience with mounting a scope like the Nikon or Zeiss on a #1 and can comment on getting rounds in under those large ocular bells please chime in.

Thank you all

Nice gun ruger #1 have a couple my self sorry I cant comment on your choice of scope and low magnifacation but worry not of inserting shells, under the bell for the clearance is fine.if it does present a problem just get higher rings, but then eye alignment could get tricky.

Check out Weaver 1.5-5x32 Grand Slam.  For an inexpensive scope, try a Bushnell Banner in 1.5-4.5x32.

I shot 3 mule does last week with a pre-64 M70 with 2 pound 2 ounce Pac-Nor 270 barrel, 1 pound 12 ounce Borden Rimrock stock, Harris Bi pod, Leu VX1 2x7x32 scope left on 2X, Brownells 40mm soft eye piece, Butler Creek stretch sling, Cabelas ammo pouch.
Total rifle weight 8.75 pounds before 130 gr Ballistic tip ammo is added.

Reading range with a Leica 1200 LRF total weight 0.5 pounds

The deer:
400 yards on 2x, held a foot over the back, flank shot, followed up with a head shot at close range.
500 yards on 2x, held over two feet over the back, lung shot.
400 yards on 2x, held a foot over the head while going away. Hit the spine.

The antelope at 625 yards on 2X:
missed

The elk at 625 yards on 2X:
missed

I have never shot a big game animal before this, just thousands of rodents out to 250 yards.
I have never shot at a target further than 100 yards with a deer rifle before this season.

I am going to completely re tool for next year; new scope, new rifle, new cartridge.

But I am going to keep shooting at 2X, so I can see if animals or hit.

If I had a Ruger #1 in 25-06 and I needed a scope ( and pretending I had some money) I would consider just a 6X42 or a Meopta 7X56 !!  Boy Howdy!!  Bucky

Pick your reticle and enjoy the better glass.  Actually the concept of going from 30-06 to a 25-06 perplexes me when use is limited to 25 to 150 yds.  That is the distance open sights work fairly well for and the 25-06 is typically chosen to hunt medium game at the 200 to 300 yd range. If the price range was  higher I would say put a Trijicon accupoint on it.

Rather than spray the countryside with bullets you would do better to use some system to more accurately place the bullet.  I suggest you limit yourself to closer distances to avoid merely wounding valuable game animals or use the proper tools.  Use a laser rangefinder to determine distance. Know that trajectory of your cartridge or better yet use either a BDC reticle (they only work on the highest power) use a scope like   The best way to know if you hit them is practice at the distances you plan to shoot.

I am feeling un motivated to reach 50 posts.
I can keep buying scopes from SWFA, but this is crazy.

Back to the #1, I had one and eye relief was an issue.  Because the scope mounts on the barrell I couln't get it close enough to my eye without getting setback rings.  Choose something with plenty of eye relief.

Clark, that's just the way the forum software is configured.  It won't let you edit posts or post pictures until you've reached 50 posts.  Nothing personal against you, friend.

Hi,

Thanks for the information.  Nothing on the thread for a couple of days, then I go off to a swim meet for the weekend and pow!

@Urimaginaryfrnd:  I will have to look into the IOR's.  Intellectually, I love the idea of a fixed 4 on this rifle, but I will be stalking in pretty dense forest and worry a little about close shots.

About the choice of 25-06.  I walked into a gun store and saw a used but pristine #1 in 25-06 for under $550.  Sold!  I have always wanted a #1, it will do just fine for almost anything I want to shoot in the lower 48, and I still have my beloved CZ in 30-06.

I will probably bring both rifles out to for next season.

those shots arent very ethical imo either. i hate the kinda hunting where you shoot at a spec on the horizon and hope to hit it. id rather take a 25 yd shot than a 600 yd shot any day... unless im shooting at paper that is :)
