I'm pondering a scope for one of my squirrel rifles.  Where I hunt, most of the squirrel action comes in the last 30 minutes of light.  I have knocked squirrels out of trees at 70-100 yards braced on a log or stump at mid-day, but most of the squirrels are 25-40 yards away in the late afternoon or early evening.  For this reason, the scope/rifle will be zeroed for 50 yds.

While .22LR's are not notoriously hard kickers  , occasionally I have had cased rifles and scopes shift POI from bouncing around in my truck on the way.  I have various scopes including a Zeiss Conquest that I really like, but these scopes are on other rifles.  Besides, I hate to go overboard spending a lot on a squirrel scope.

In the best squirrel woods, the lighting is especially dim, so illuminated reticles may hold the answer.  Specifically I am interested in the Bushnell 3200 3-9x40mm Firefly with its freedom from batteries.  Any thoughts?

i think the 3200 would be a fine choice BUT its parallax is set to 100yds, i think, and be careful not to spook the game w/ your flashlight when charging it.

i like using a conventional illum reticle on an adjustible objective or side focus scope that can close focus down to 20 yrds or less.

this will give you the versatility you need for day/night/close/far shots.

therein lies the problem, there aren't that many around in the lower price range. What is your budget for this scope?

welcome to the OT - i'll look around and see what i come up with.

i don't know much about mueller scopes - but they say fully mulit coated and this power range would be fine for rimfire - i love #4 reticles for hunting.

something LIKE this would be great.

MU41650IGR Mueller 4-16x50 Sport Dot Riflescope Mueller 4-16x50 Sport Dot Riflescope
  • Matte
  • Illuminated German #4
  • 1"
  • Adjustable Objective
SWFA: $209.95

BUT......

If you can spring some extra cash into the optics - you won't get much better than http://www.light-stream.co.uk/spec2.htm

it's a good bit more expensive, but worth every penny.  i have one on my 22LR and it's oh so nice.

Good luck - let us know what you think.

Thanks!

Would like to spend maybe $200.  Are Mueller's pretty good?

I have the scope that jonbravado posted above on my squirrel rifle.  I shoot squirrels in the head out to 100 yards easily.  You would be hard pressed to find a better scope for that purpose.  However, it is a bit heavy and somewhat untraditional, but that doesn't bother me. Some of the ol' timers here give me a hard time about the size of it. I have several typical rimfire scopes for squirrel, but they aren't nearly as fun as this one.  When I went with my buddies hunting they all bought that exact scope.  I have it on a CZ 452 American in 17 HM2.  I think that  Muellers are similar to my elite 3200 in performance or at least very close.

On a side note since you mentioned low light hunting, that illuminated red dot is the cat's meow at sunrise and dusk for squirrel and other similar game. I'm not sure what other scope in your price range has a german #4 with Illuminated dot like the Mueller.
