"And for whatever reason, you turn that power down, and it gathers more light."

Just like magic.

Aww damn. All these years I've been buying higher quality scopes with better glass so that I could see in low light. Only to find out just now that I could have just bought a cheapo scope and turned the power down and be "amazed".

Assuming this guy is just trying to help, and also the representation by Savage it makes me wonder how many shooters didn't know that turning down the mag increased the exit pupil and made the image appear brighter. But it really makes me wonder why the user didn't have the variable on the lowest power at the beginning of the hunt (assuming it was barely light at the start).

Next time your at a hunting camp look and see how many keep their scopes turned all the way up, you'd be surprised by those who think its better to do that than to keep them on the lowest.

You'd also be amazed at how many would say "the what?" when you mention exit pupil.

I know several that think a 50mm lens means a wider FoV.  They want the 50mm cause it gives the "big picture."

Stick that in your exit pupil. Or, wait, I know! "Exit pupil!" is what you say when you expel a student.

To reply to a good point made in this thread. It is pretty common for people (me included on opening day last year!) to leave scopes turned up. I never really thought of it as a light transmission problem, but more of not having enough field of view. But it's true too that at first light you need more light through the scope. So two reasons I can think of to keep it turned down.
