Hey all

I'm putting together a care package for some deployed pals, and was looking for a moderately decent pair of low-cost compact binocs.

I understand the cost vs quality issue.  I'm looking for options for a pair that can be tossed in a pouch on a pack or harness, and if they happened to get destroyed, then nobody's going to cry over them.

Any suggestions?

I am not sure what you consider low-cost, but I think a good bet would be something like Leupold Yosemite 6x30.  They are suprisingly good for the price and comparatively low magnification makes them very user friendly in all lighting conditions.

I've been using a pair of Pentax DCF MP 8x28's for about two years and have been extremely pleased with their performance. They meet JIS Class 6 standards for being waterproof, are nitrogen filled, and are much better optically than their  approximately $200 cost would indicate.  They are also available in a 10X version. The only negative is a cheap case and strap.
