I can't help it I love the Mini even with all its faults. I don't remember showing off this one here so here goes. I had this screwy idea for a compensator and sight. I sent the rifle along with drawings and parts to Great Western for their full treatment and my custom work. John is amazing and the trigger is now a buttery smooth 3lbs, the action has been bedded, the gas system tuned, and the barrel shortened and cryoed. She shoots mighty good for a Mini-14.

That is an old old old Thermold and I haven't used it but once and that was 20+ years ago. I just never felt like arguing with a cop about California legal grandfathered magazines versus felony arrest by someone not familiar with the exemption. Back in the Day the Thermold had a decent rep so when I hit a preban gun show I bought it and a handful of PMI 30rd mags. I've never even tried the PMIs but the PMI were widely regarded to be the equal of factory mags.

I was finally going test the mags this week but I just found out that my gun club went belly up. From Shooting Wire:
"One of the oldest public shooting facilities in California, the Inland Fish and Game Conservation Association shooting range in Highland, has closed due to a lawsuit filed by a developer who owns an adjacent property. The 1,400 member range was one of the last open-air ranges for rifle, pistol and shotgun and has served tens of thousands of shooters in the past few years.

The lawsuit was filed in 2007 by Highland Fifth-Orange Partners LLC of Santa Ana, headed up by developer Hal Woods. Judge Christopher Warren of the Superior Court of San Bernardino issued a ruling on Monday, July 27, against the shooting facility and the gates were rolled closed at the end of the day on Wednesday, July 29. The club was assessed $1.4 million in damages, and it has spent (or its insurance carriers have spent) about $1 million in attorney fees since the beginning of the problems with the "new" neighbor."

The Mini-14 is a great little rifle (at least in recent ranch rifle versions)!

Like .22 rifles, you need to spend a little time, and find out what ammunition your rifle likes best.  Then buy it in bulk!  A trigger job also helps.  I have a Weaver Grand Slam 1.5-5x32 on mine, and it works for both "near" and "far" shooting.

After shooting mine, my wife decided she wanted one of her own!   Fine with me!  The newest versions come with a 20 round magazine and a much better rear sight.
