Evening Gents,

I am spending a fair amount of time reading and unfortunately confusing myself further, I was hoping to utilize your collective brilliance to make my decision easier and faster.  I'll try to be brief, and thank you X 1,000,000 in advance.

OK I have a Savage Weather Warrior chambered in 300 win mag and I really love this rifle.  I got a Nikon Buckmaster 3-9x40 scope for it (needed to get one on there on short notice) and although it's not a bad scope by any means I would really like to move a step up.  I can't yet afford Zeiss or Swarovski (one day though!) I read good things about the Nikon Monarch series and the Bushnell 6500, and I can find them online in the ~$500 range, which is what I'd like to spend (ideally $400ish but if it's really worth it, $600ish)

I live in Florida and I'll mostly be hunting paper targets in the 100-300 yard range, with the occasional furry critter mixed in there.  I love the look of a high magnification 50mm scope, but I read mixed opinions regarding the jump from 40mm to 50mm.

I'm considering the:

Nikon Monarch (BDC Reticle):
8-32x50, 6-24x50 and 5-20x44

or

Bushnell 6500
4.5-30x50

I will be doing very little low light shooting and probably shoot the rifle every month or two, I'd like the ability to go visit relatives out in an area where I could try to play with some 600-1000 yard shots though, if that doesn't change the recommendation

Thank you thank you thank you for your help!!

If a 50mm lens isn't advised for my situation, the Bushnell 4200 6-24x40 also looks nice.  I really was hoping for a 50mm tho...

Where you are shooting yourself in the foot is you are looking at scopes that have vairly limited amount of internal adjustment which is not suitable for long range work.  For under $600 this is the real ticket to be able to dial in correction and actually shoot those 600 to 1000 yd targets as well as hunt.

Other possible choices would be:
Leupold 6x42 FX-3 Competition Hunter Riflescope Target Dot Leupold 6x42 FX-3 Competition Hunter Riflescope

  • Matte
  • Target Dot

Zeiss 3-9x40 Conquest Rifle Scope Rapid Z 600 Zeiss 3-9x40 Conquest Rifle Scope
Stock # - 5214609971
  • Matte
  • Rapid Z 600

$574.95
The ones your suggested might get you to 600 but not much past that and if you are going to be shooting those varying ranges you either need target knobs or a balistic reticle system.

To get into a higher power optic that has enough MOA (internal adjustment) you are talking Leupold Mk4 or VX3 or Sightron SIII this would do everyting you want and still have the high power range unfortunately most of the scopes in this power range suffer from not enough internal adjustment this doesnt.

That Sightron looks great, I was looking at those too, a bit more than I wanted to spend but if I can swing it (I.E. get a decent Christmas bonus) I will try to get that one.  Let's take anything over 500 yds out of the equation, I'll just save that for another day.  I really like the BDC reticle too, the mil-dot isn't my favorite.  There's anothery user on here that has a solid looking 5-20x50 for sale, would this be worth consideration?  It's most certianly close to what I want to spend and the description sounds wonderful.

Thanks again for your input I really appreciate it!
