Hi,

I just bought a 30-06 26 inch heavy barrel for my T/C Encore.  I have been looking at scopes for a while now and I am having trouble deciding.  My price range is 300 - 500.  I was looking at the Nikon Monarch 2.5-10x50 Matte BDC,  Nikon Buckmaster 4-12x50 sf   Leupold VX-III 3.5-10x50, Leupold VX-III 4.5-14x50mm.  I am leaning more on the monarch.  If I decide on the Leupold will the 4.5-14 be to much scope?  I will be using it mostly for whitetail hunting and some target.  Shooting up to 300 yards is not out of the question.  Any suggestions?  Also, what rings should I get?  I am thinking of buying T/C Maxima base and rings.  Any info on those?  Thanks in advance!

I would go with a Bushnell 4200 3-9x40 at SWFA.com for $249.  They are as good or better than any scope you listed.  At $249 it is pretty tough to beat.  They are great scopes, I have two of them.

Oh yes, another opportunity for my usual plug for a Zeiss Conquest. The 3-9x40 would be in your price range, and would be a very nice addition to your Encore. A 9x scope is still plenty for shots at 300. I have a 4.5-14x44 on a .270 WSM and have shot that out to 600 yards while set on 10x. You couldn't go wrong with the Elite 4200, but it's hard to find an unhappy Conquest owner also.  Almost forgot, welcome to the OT. Senior members here are very helpful, and know their stuff.

......................I`m not a big 50mm objective fan and prefer the lower profiled scopes. Any extra light gathering is minimal between a 40 to 44mm vs a 50mm. The 50`s are also more money and are heavier.

I`d go the better optics first and apply the money there and stay with a 40 to 44mm objective. I would also add the Elite 4200 to your short list.

Although it can be used, a 4.5-14 imo, is a little too much scope for your application. A 3x9 or a 2.5x10 will also do the job with no problem.

Can`t comment on the bases and rings since I don`t own that rifle.

Zeiss Conquest 3-9X40 with Warne rings and mounts (you could also use Weaver mounts with the Warne rings).

I like the 3-9x40 for hunting deer (I'm in Western NY). Like most people on this board I would recommend (best bang for $$):

Bushnell 4200 3-9x40 (I own this one)
Nikon Team Primos (rebadged Monarch with the BDC reticle) 3-9x40
Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40

You could also not go wrong with a Leupold VX-III but its more money for equal glass (or less according to some out there).

I would go with the 4200, as for rings I like Tally one piece.

Another vote for the 4200!

I just mounted an Elite 4200 3-9X on my .270 and love it!! Used Talley lightweight 2 piece mounts and they have been wonderful so far.  Great scope, great mounts and great value!

Thanks for all the information!  After taking into consideration what everyone said I did some research and ended up getting the BUSHNELL ELITE 4200 3-9X40 RIFLE SCOPE 42-3944M.  I think it should be fine.  Hopefully it doesn't take me a week to decide on the rings!  Thanks again everyone.

I think I am going with the Talley one piece scope mount for the encore.  No?
