I am looking at the Nikon 4.5-14x40 Buckmaster Mdl 6469 or the Millett 4-16x50 Tactical 30mm Riflescope  Stock # - BK81008.  Both are comparable in price. But I am curious as to which would be the better scope, in regards to the light gathering ability, toughness, and ability to retain zero. I have had a previous millett scope and was very happy with its lowlight capabilities and ability to hold zero. What I wasn't happy with was the toughness. (side focus quit working).

So is the Nikon the better buy or is there some other scope out there with the same features that I could consider?

Whatever I choose will be going on a PSL-54C with a side mounted rail using Super Sniper rings.  I am going to be shooting a 7.62x54r 203 gr SP round.  The ranges I am looking at using it in are going to be in the 100-300 yard range based off the geographic region I'll be in.

I know there are much more expensive scopes that are much better, but currently I have a budget to work with and these scopes fit within that budget.  I would be interested in other scopes in that price range, but am not as familiar with them as I am with the Nikon and the Millett.

Any comments and help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Nikon Buckmaster has a pretty good track record for durability.  Millett has been having some QC problems lately.

If your range is 100-300 yards, why not go with a fixed magnification scope?  For ~$300 you can get a 10x42 SWFA SS:

It has a proven track record of being tough as nails and it is quite good optically.

If you insist on a variable scope, I would also give a good look to Weaver Grand Slam 3-10x40 or 4.5-14x40.

Thanks for the reply.

I am intrigued by the SS, and it fits within my budget. I have no experience with the Weavers but I might have to do some research on them based on your recommendations. How does the Weaver and SS compare to the Nikon when it comes to it's ability in low light?

SS is a scope of different configuration, so it is hard to make a direct comparison.  That having been said, while I have played with the Buckmaster quite a bit, I do not own one.  I do own three SS scopes.

As far as Weaver Grand Slam goes, it is a better scope than Nikon Buckmaster.

Koshkin,

I'll take a look at the Weavers, they look like a good scope although I have'nt got my hands on one to do a direct comparison. I did get a look at the Nikon at a local store and it seems like a better scope compared to the Millett. Since I just found out today that the Millett I returned is no longer in stock , I now have some money freed up to get something better.  Thanks for the help!
