I would like to purchase a scope for a Smith and Wesson M&P Sport II that I recently purchased. I primarily plan to use the new rifle to target practice at the range but may do some some occasional hunting. I am willing to spend up to $300 for a new scope and mount that will work with my AR15. I also need to consider a scope that will work with (or around) the front iron sight. I originally had my eyes on the Nikon 3x32 or 3-9x40 P-233 scopes. Currently, I am giving more serious consideration to the more expensive Redfield 3-9x40 Revolution TAC scope in combination with the SWFA S.S.A.L.T mount. I am new to AR15 rifles. Are those scopes good choices for my needs and price range? Are there other scopes that I should consider? I should note that I already have a Holosun red dot scope for fast acquisition at shorter distances.
I appreciate your input. I received great insight from this board 4 years ago which led to a purchase of a Sightron Big Sky 3.5x10x42 scope with Talley rings for my Ruger American 308 rifle. |

Good place to start looking - http://swfa.com/Optic-Packages-C4618.aspx I have purchased this setup before when on a budget - http://swfa.com/Leupold-3-9x40-Mark-AR-MOD-1-Riflescope-Mount-Kit-P61999.aspx and was pleased with it. Its more than serviceable and will serve you well, I think. Duplex is heavy enough its ok for hunting and the dials seem to be pretty good for what you pay. Should have any issues seeing your front sight in the sight picture either with the 3x on the low side it shouldn't be visible. Don't forget SWFA also has http://www.samplelist.com/ which offers demo and used scopes for great bargains. Several good options on there. |

Occasionally, I will hunt wild hogs and possibly coyote probably in the 100 to 350 yard range. Sadly, my friend with land outside of town just announced that he is moving out of state. So, my opportunities to hunt is drastically reduced. For now, the bulk of my shooting will be target shooting a paper and steel targets at a local range. That is not a bad thing. I do need to get experience with my AR.

SVT_Tactical -- Thanks for the scope recommendation. I checked out the Leupold 3-9x40 Mark AR MOD 1 scope at a local retailer this evening. I really liked that scope. The optics were great, with good eye relief. The scope was reasonably light weight. I liked that scope better than the Nikon P233 scopes. The Leupold is probably better quality than the comparable scope made by the Redfield affiliate company. The SWFA Optical package is the best value and the best option for me if I decide to purchase that scope.

Glad you liked it. I found it very nice. SWFA provides this great forum for us and often knocks the competitors out the water with pricing. On the rare occasion they are cheaper they offer a 110% price match I think so its a no brainer to check with SWFA for optics and outdoor needs prior to anyone purchasing. Happy hunting! |
