I am looking for a low-powered variable combat durable optic. I am not going to take it into combat, but I am going to take it through some rough terrain and I want something that can take a spill and keep on ticking.

I want a true 1X magnification on the low-end, and the upper end, 4-8X, immaterial which or what in between.

Daylight illumination is preferred, but I also want a reticle that is very usable without being illuminated. This kindof rules out most FFP optics like the S&B SD, which are worthless on 1X without illumination.

I had bought a VCOG a while back, but it didn't meet my expectations vs. its cost, so I dumped it. Eye-relief sucked, and optically it was "meh". Illumination was so-so (although I liked the reticle). Diopter focus sucked. Always blurry when I changed magnification.

Things I rank in level of importance:

-Durability/reliability
-Reticle design/1X usability
-Glass quality
-Illumination
-Weight/length of optic (I do not want to exceed 21oz weight or 11" length of the optic).

So far, I am considering the:

Nightforce NSX 1-4 FC-3G
Kahles K16i
Leupold MK6 TMD
??

The Minox ZP8 1-8X24 is looks like an awesome design. http://www.minox.com/index.php?id=tac_scopes&L=1

I am not familiar with any of the .gov or agency testing on the SWFA scopes. Can you tell me more about their durability design parameters?

The Vortex isn't up to my par. Too fragile. SWAT officer I know broke his just zeroing it. Went fuzzy all of a sudden. I think Vortex was courting gamers with this one, and it's a helluva bargain for that! But it's not the hard-use optic I am after.

The Bushnell is a FFP scope, which likely kills it on 1X without illumination?

The SpectreDR is interesting, but ARMS mounts and POI shift issues make me hesitant.

The Trijicons, while interesting, are in the shadow of the VCOG I had. It makes me hesitant. If they messed up their most expensive 1X-? variable...how good could their econo-line be?

Th Minox is just weird. A true 1X scope with parallax set at 200m? "sophisticated tactical reticle"? I'll pass...

I  REALLLY doubt your gonna break the SWFA SSHD lines scope.  You can contact  SWFA for the specifics, but I believe the original line was a tasco product built to SOCOM specs, then the design was later aquired by SWFA. Which has gone through numerous uprades over the years.  Someone can correct me if im wrong.
You just rejected some of the top scopes on the market that fit your criteria, I'm out of info. Maybe Koskin or someone else will chime in with better info.

The SWFA variables have nothing to do with the original fixed power designed that Tasco owned the rights too way back when.  SWFA is the sole company behind the variables.  They are excellent scopes for a very good price, you get a lot for your money.

They are very good scopes.

You are not going to break a Razor that easily, they are not gaming optics.  If your friend had an issue its obviously one of those cases when an optic just had a failure.  Any optic at any price can have issues and they all do, no matter how much you pay for them.  I wouldn't base your whole opinion on 1 single optic failure.  If you do that then I guarantee you every single optic any of us could list will not meet your expectations, because all of them have had failures.

And for the record, I have read of failures on all these brands.
Maybe look at a Swaro Z6 1-6x.
US optics has some 1-4x and 1-8x options.
Steiner has a 1-5x
Sightron has a 1-7x

Understood re:sample of 1.

The US Optics 1-4 with their dot seems enticing. It's heavy, but its short, which should mitigate some of the "feeling" of that weight.

I guess part of me does lean towards the Nighforce because of all their talk of what they do to make them durable, and they are NAVSPEC issued optics.

I went by swfa and looked at their optics. The 1-4 looked best to me. That said I'm just going back with a t2 + g33 magnifier. Nothing else has come close in weight or functionality. Bdc is a non issue. My caliber and AO are a point and click combo.

I've had the U.S. optics 1-4, didn't like the reticle, glass was okay, I was not a fan.
On Nightforce, they make good stuff.
On SWFA HDs, great scopes for the money.

I have the 1-6 vortex gen razer, really like it so far, but it is night light. Image quality is great.

Well, I got a good deal on a nightforce 1-4 with PTL and fc2 reticle. New old stock. I am very happy with it!

I'm not an optics expert, but to second the failure rate of any optics company, my very first aimpoint optic was a compM3 and the dot died after 5 minutes of inserting the battery. I sent it back and they determined it was defective. I have owned others since with perfect success and continue to love them. I doubt anyone would say that aimpoints are inherently failure prone. This seemed applicable to your vortex experience.
