Good day, I have been looking for a scope for a few months. I live in Canada so my options are a bit limited in comparison to south of the border.. Also price isn't quite at the same spot. You people seem to be quite experienced with optics, so I figured I'd post this here.

Anyhow, I hunt with a Marlin 336, and the current Vortex Vrossfire II 3-9 that sits on it is returning to 22LR. That scope provided me with decent performance in brush and low light performance, but I honestly I don't know any better when it comes to low light scope experience.

My budget is around $300-$400 (Canadian). I paid $400 for the rifle so I think it would be about right for the scope. So far I have looked at these scopes;

Leupold VX-2 2-7x32 ($390)
Bushnell Elite 2-7x32 ($285)
Vortex Viper 3-9x40 ($325)
Nikon Monarch 3 2-8x32 ($300)

I am ready to pay around $400, and I want something that will be practical for early morning deer, along with last legal hours of the Canadian North which tend to be quite dark. As a reference, the Vortex Crossfire II provided me with pretty much the same vision through the tube as I could see without the tube, which is ok I guess, but I'd like a bit of an upgrade.

Thank you! Howdy

You might also check out the Vortex Diamondback 2-7x35.  For a lever gun I would stay in the  2-7x32 range.  The Meopta is a very good scope but it would be too big for a Marlin 336 IMO.  My personal 336 wears a VX-II with the #4 reticle.

Yeah I think 2-7 would be ideal, diamondback seems decent, but I can spend a bit more. Is the VX-2 a decent option then for low light conditions described?

Welcome to Optics Talk.

Posting prices is OK, I guess, but please don't post links to other optics vendors.

Does the Bushnell have the Rain Guard? That would be a consideration for me.

I would look at the Vortex Diamondback as magshooter recommended. If you compare the VX2 and Diamondback side by side I think you'll be surprised.

Thanks for the input, so the Diamondback is a better choice than the Monarch 3 or Bushnell Elite for low light?

I have not used the other two scopes you mentioned, hopefully someone else can chime in to better assist you. However I feel that for the price the Diamondback is hard to beat. In MD we are allowed to hunt whitetail 1/2 hr before sunrise, and 1/2 hr passed sunset. My 3-9x40 Diamondback allows me to do so while hunting in heavy brush. Hope that helps.

I should add that if I had to choose a variable for use only under the conditions you described, I would opt for the 1.75-5 or 2-7 Diamondback over the 3-9.

I  would go with a 2-7 or a 1-4 the ideal scope choice would be a1-4 Trijicon Accupoint with its tritium + fiber optic illumination but its a lot more money but very worthwhile.
I also very much like Leupolds fixed 6x42 for brush the Heavy Duplex for open longer distances the long range duplex. I find that I can get onto something pretty good up to 6x but more than that wont work for me hand holding the rifle without a rest.  The 6x42 is as bright of an optic in low light as one can get.

I wish I had the money for that trijicon, is that a bit much optic for a marlin 336 though?

The problem I see with the scopes on your list is not with the quality of the lenses, but the reticles. I would look at the Meopta with the #4 reticle near your price point. My experience with the Leupold, Monarch and Elite plex reticles in low light has been poor. Glass is fine, though.

If this is a brush scope it needs to start at 1. To me brush is usually a 10 -30 yard shot. I like a ghost ring on my 336

True, I would like the 2-7 though.

The VX-2 is probably the best fitting scope, light and compact, still decent performance.. seems like a good fit. Choosing is so hard lol..

Can you define minimum and maximum distances?  I have hunted heavy brush and prefer a red dot for close encounters.  They are great for low light too since both eyes are open.

Range is anywhere from 10 yards to 200 yards. I stalk and move. Brush about 50% of the time, open woods and open fields the rest of the time. Deer and coyote.

I would shoot up to 300 yards if I were shooting coyotes

Minox ZA5 1.5-8x32 might be another contender.

I like mine away.

Hmm, seems to be a bit more expensive than the bunch.

I think I'm just going to buy two scopes lol..

Two scopes you can't see very well through do not equal one quality scope...

I think my best hope for low light vision in my price range is the Viper. If I buy that and a Monarch 3 for example, I can compare them and see how much of a difference there is? Or am I way off?

I just wish I knew people with a bunch of scopes I could just try out at dusk.

And maybe in the end my eyes are good enough to make the best out of a lesser performing scope?

Dunno..
