I'm looking to replace the scope that I currently have on my long range rifle.  Currently I'm using a nikon buckmaster 4.5-14x and it's a nice scope, but I'd like to be able to see objects closer than I can now.  I use this rifle for hunting also so I'd like to get a variable power scope.  I'd like something with dedicated target knobs and I'm pretty close to buying a Bushnell 6-24x50mm Elite 4200 30mm item #426245T.  It's at the upper limit of what I can spend on a scope and I was curious about two things.

For the money is there a better scope that fits my wants better?

Is anyone here using this scope that have any words of advice?

Generally speaking, more magnification is not always a good thing, but I will leave that choice up to you.

The Elite 4200 you are looking at is a very nice scope and even aside from the magnification increase, it provides for a considerable upgrade in optical quality over your Buckmaster.

That having been said, you need to provide a bit more detail of the kind of shooting you do.  For example, if you need to dial in a lot of elevation adjustment, Elite 4200 with 50MOA of total adjustment range may not be sufficient.

I would suggest you also look at Vortex Viper 6.5-20x50 which has 70MOA of adjustment.

Next step up in terms of adjustment range would be Sightron S3 6-24x50.

I know what you're saying about over doing it on the magnification.  I just like the option of the higher magnification, but it won't get used all the time.  The scope I'm thinking about is going to be for a rifle that goes to the gun range 99% of it's life and occationally goes hunting.   Where I shoot we can go out to 1000 yards and I already have a 20MOA rail on the gun.  I did wish this bushnell had more MOA in it.  The way I'm looking at it, if I'm going to spend the money I want something that's going to have a big difference over what I've already got.  Another 10x of magnifcation sounds good, but the 6.5-20x doesn't seem like it'd be enough to make much difference.
I'm really not familiar with Vortex or Sightron's.

It is not all about magnification.  Even the same magnification with better glass is going to improve how well you see by a considerable margin.

Both Vortex and Sightron are good companies.  Compared to Elite 4200, Vortex Viper has very slightly lower resolution, but better contrast.  Some people prefer one, other like the other.  It is a matter of personal preference.

Sightron S3 outresolves Elite 4200 a bit with similar contrast.  At higher magnifications, S3 is a bit clearer than Elite 4200.  This may help:

With all that out of the way, if you plan to use for hunting at all, I suggest dialing back on magnification a bit.  Low end of 6x is not very low.

This would probably work well:

I agree completely.  This scope you mentioned is pretty much the perfect scope as far as I can tell for a hunting & long range shooting scope.  I've been back and forth a lot on what to buy and I'm just not settled on anything yet.  I know the buckmaster does a good enough job and and has worked for me for a long time, but I need something that's at a better level now and hopefully I'll decide on something soon.
