First off, hi everyone, as you can tell, this is my first post on this forum.

I want to put a scope on my 21" FAL, and need some advice. (I'm not sure whether to post this on the rifle or tactical forums but I think this is more appropriate here) I currently only shoot paper targets at a 100 yard gun range, but want to eventually make some 800+ yd shots out in the desert (or a range if I can find one). I've read quite a few forum posts and articles and have a pretty good grasp of the glass quality vs magnification vs price dynamic of scopes. However, I still do know know where that sweet spot is for my gun. (Remember, we are talking about a 2-3 MOA gun here). I am not necessarily looking for a tactical scope due to the prices, although would not mind having one.  Since I am mostly doing target shooting, I am looking at scopes with higher magnification than usual for such a gun.

So, my basic question is, what mid-range scopes would you recommend? My price range is around $300, with an absolute maximum of $500. (however, I really want to keep it around $300). To give an idea of what I am looking for, here are two scopes that I am seriously considering:

Nikon-Buckmaster-6-18x40

Nikon-Buckmaster-45-14x40

Magnification wise, I am leaning toward the higher powered one, but do not know how good the scope does on the higher magnifications. On the other hand, the 4.5-14 does have some good reviews on this forum and on others, and as an added plus, has a mildot reticle. Over all, I am leaning toward purchasing the 4.5-14. I really do not have any experience with other scope brands, so any recommendations or insights would be very helpful.

As previously mentioned, having a mildot reticle would be very nice, but I can manage with a simple duplex if necessary. Also, are there any tactical scopes within my price range with the same quality level (i.e. midrange) of the two scopes that I am considering?

Finally, does anyone have experience with the Burris Signature scope rings (the ones with the plastic inserts)? I am currently in limbo between them and the Leupold QD ones. (I.e., any recommendations regarding scope rings would also be very welcome Big Grin)

SVT is correct.  This site is operated by SWFA, an optics retailer.  It is not only against the forum rules you agreed to when registering your user account, but it is impolite to use the forum our host provides for us to link to their competitors.  I edited your post to remove the links.  Please refrain from doing this in future posts.

Take a look here for great deals on used and demo optics, you'll get more glass for your money

I even saw some of the nikons you orginally wanted there.  Keep in mind that if you do want to stretch it out eventually youll need a scope with plenty of internal adjustment which Nikon's not known for having.   I would really look at the standard SS 10X or SS 16X for your needs.

SWFA 10x42 Super Sniper is your best bet.

Out of the two scopes you suggested, the 4.5-14x40 is a better option.  Buckmaster is a decent scopes, but at 18x it is not at its best.  Stick with more moderate magnification.

Oh, and I edited the topic title for you.

Why are you trying for 800yds. with a 2 moa gun? Unless the target is larger than 16  inches. This in addition to a trigger that is made for a battle rifle -- well. Lets not forget that the cheek weld with the fal stock will not allow a high mt. Heres a set up that will ring 8x11 inch steel all day long at 500 yds, and is heavy duty enough to take the bolt slamming of a semi auto. Even the SS 6x would be a better choice.

Thanks, for the replies. I apologise for the retail mixup; I totally admit I just skimmed the forum rules, expecting them to be like any other forum. Definitely did not expect any rule like rule #3; Looking at the previous posts, I didn't really consider the fact that all links pointed to SWFA I just though you guys really liked that site Big Grin.

As for the scope, I'll most likely get the 4.5-12 then, unless i find something on the links provided. As for the scope height and cheek weld, I am fully aware of that, and most likely will end up having to remove the rear sight.

I still would appreciate any comments or suggestions for scope rings, especially the signature rings, since they do have the ability to have a built-in elevation set with the optional inserts.

removing the rear site won't even get you close, the only solution is something like Magpuls replacement stock with adjustable cheek piece. Heres a 4.5x14x56 notice the almost 3 inches of rise between the cheek and the scope axis.
