I'm fairly new to long range shooting and just purchased my first hunting rifle, a Remington 700 Police 300 win mag. Now I'm looking for some glass and could really use some suggestions. Something around the $500 range is where I need to be. I was looking at this, anyone have any opinions or experience with it? http://swfa.com/Falcon-Menace-55-25x50-Tactical-30mm-Riflescope-P49980.aspx
Any help would be appreciated.... Thnx

IF it were me…
Looking at a long range shooter, I would opt for fixed 10x, maybe 12x if not intending to shoot much at shorter ranges (under 300).  I would go with one of the SS 10x scopes, preferring the SS10xHD (which is a bit higher in price than your stated).

I've seen a few people who have had good luck with the Falcon, more who have not.  At the very worst, you use the fixed power to school yourself in how to shoot long range while saving up for a variable of much higher quality.

Welcome to OT...

I've had a few PSS in 300WM, they are rough on scopes.  I would avoid Falcon, they do have some reliability issues.

The fist mistake most people make getting into "long range" is they go for too much magnification in an inexpensive scope.  That leads to MUCH distress, and spending more money later to correct the error.

If the budget of $500 is firm, I too would recommend the SS 10X.  If you can go a bit higher, there are other options.

Keep in mind you also need base and rings, is that a part of the $500 or is that another pot of money?

Base and rings are separate stash, if I have to spend a couple hundred more on a better scope I think I can manage that as well....

Then if you are just hankering to have a variable… the SS 3-9 is an outstanding value (though I am personally not enthralled with 3-9 power scopes, this one is a great one).

The 10xHD is superior.  The 6x is very good.

I had forgotten how excellent the 10xHD is… I was playing around with it yesterday on a CZ700.  Love that scope.

+1.  I'm about to put one on my long-range hand blaster in 7WSM.  I have no qualms whatsoever about going out to 6-700M with the handgun.  It's a great value.

Look at this one.

http://www.samplelist.com/Vortex-4-16x50-Viper-HS-Rifle-Scope-DEMO-B-P87800.aspx

Since you are just starting out. This will give you a chance to learn what a quality turret feels and functions like. (I've heard that the SS tracks as well but have not had hands on "yet") You can learn the pros and cons of BDC and the pros and cons of magnification. You'll have the means of learning to shoot with hold over as well as dialing in dope. It leaves you some cash to build some savings up for something better when you know more about your shooting style.

Good Luck! and Welcome to the OT!!

P.S. 300WM is a awesome choice!!

Another great option. That is my favorite magnification range, perfect for just about everything. The HD is nice, this 3-15X will get you out past 1,000 yards, assuming you can do it.
