Hey...Newbie here with some questions.  I'm going to be going back home to South Dakota this summer and I'm looking forward to doing some prairie dog hunting again.  In the past I've just used a .22 lr with a cheap 3-9 scope.  But now, I'm looking at buying a remington 700 LV SF in a .223 and when it comes to a good varmit scope, I'm lost.  I'm looking at spending +/- $400 on a scope.  I've been to one gun shop and they've said go with Leupold.  An other gun shop says Leupold...ewwww...get a Zeiss.  I'm afraid to go and ask at another gun store...it seems that what ever brand they sell is the best.

I've done some searches and found some good information, but I want to be certain of what I'm getting before dropping that much cash into a scope.  Also, what would a good recticle be?

thanks

rob

A Zeiss Conquest 4.5-14x44 would be a good choice. They are a little more than you would probably like to spend but are well worth it IMO. Or you could go with a Conquest 3.5-10x44, which can be had for around $450-$500. Either way Zeiss is probably the best scope in this price range.

The Bushnell Elite 4200 would make a great choice.  Rocky is correct in saying the Zeiss is the best in that price range, however you would not be getting the magnification you deserve for that type of hunting.

Check it out

The bushnell 4200 scopes are very good. I have one in the 6-24 power and can say it is as clear on 24x as it is on 6x. Very bright and sharp all the way to the edge.Made my V-16 look bad when comparing. A nikon monarch 6.5-20 would ba another good choice for your rifle.

You won't go wrong with a Leupold VX III 4.5-14X40.   I had a 700 LVSF in 223 with this scope on it and it matched well.  Not as big and heavy as some of the others.  My varmints sometimes include wild hogs up to 300 lbs and the 223 was too light for me.  I'm using a 243 now.

I used to say Burris with Ballistic Mil-dot-- UNTIL Leupy came out with their new Tactical Milling Reticle (TMR)-- right here-

http://www.leupold.com/products/reticles_TMR.htm

Std. mil-dot with line stadia instead of dots positioned @ 1 mil AND .5 mil.

Those r my 2 favorite LR stationary varmint shooting reticles.

That new Leupold TMR reticle looks like a good long range varmint reticle. I would like to get one of those in a 6.5-20x50 Long Range scope.

What model of scope did he get for his long range handguns? I am sure he would not have put a 6.5-20X riflescope on his handguns?

Yeah, he is!? 1 is going on a 6-284 XP (muzzle-beaked of course). Actually he received 3 of them-- all 8.5-25's. Guess we'll see how it goes.

While rifle scopes do not have enough eye relief to be used on handguns in the usual manner they are held-extended, Some techniques used by hunter silhoute class in the IHMS will actually hold the scope tube by the left hand and peer very close to the ocular. An amazing thing to watch. However I've never seen anything higher than 6X. Can't wait to see how this works out.

Yes it seems strange to use a rifle scope on a handgun. sscoyote, I would like to know how everything goes with his setup.

We just finished our SHOTS shoot (Specialty Handgun  Outdoorsman's Tactical Seminar) out here in Pueblo, CO, and although he didn't have any of those Leupold's on top anything, he did have an 8-32X Burris BD Ballistic Mil-Dot on a 17"- barrelled 6-284 XP shooting that 115 DTAC (David Tubb's new VLD)-- no problems so he says--just acquire the tgt., back off "a little", and let it go. He really didn't have any problems with it that i saw, and i can tel you he was sure hitting with it quite a ways out.

Was in S dakota myself last year. Both my rifles had Bushnell elites 6-24 40mm mildor scopes and did just fine. Good sun shade to help with heat marage from gun etc and bright clear optics. yes Leupold is good and pricey but they are good. I'm going higher tech next year with a nightforce 8-32x 56mm. pricey but I want help to go 500-800yds on those little buggers. Good luck
