Hello all,

New to the forums and from the other topics I have read you all really help each other out and that's great.  Hope to return the favor.  I am really new to collecting guns and even less knowledable when it comes to finding the right scope obviously.  Here's my predicament.  I recently purchased the Springfield Armory M1A SOCOM II and I am looking for a maginifed scope with unlimited eye relief.  Is there even such a thing as that? Here is a pic of it.

I have searched the forum and other websites but have come up empty.  I have also looked at the aimpoint setup with the maginifer but am really not wanting a lot of clutter on it.  ACOG is a beautiful scope but I need unlimited eye relief due to it being mounted pretty far up.  I would guestimate that from where my cheek rests to the begining of the rail system is 12-14".  Is this a lost cause or is there another soultion?  Open to suggestions and your expert opinions.  Thanks

-Rob

What you need is not a scope with unlimited eye relief (there is really no such thing as a magnified scope with unlimited eye relief).

A forward mounted scope is usually referred to as a scout setup (coine by Col Cooper).  There are two dedicated scout scopes that have the right eye relief: Leupold 2.5x28 IER (Intermidiate Eye Relief) and Burris Scout 2.75x20.  Both are pretty good.  I think Burris has slightly better glass, but Leupold has larger field of view.

You could also try some sort of a pistol scope, but they tend to have parallax set for 50 yards as opposed to 100 yards for scout scopes.

EoTech 510T "AA" would give you unlimited eye relief with both eyes open but no magnification.  The EoTech has a 1 MOA dot that won't obscure targets farther out there.  Better than the Aimpoint 4 or 2 MOA dot which would cover much more the of target.  I was going to suggest the same scopes as koshkin but he beat me to it.

Thanks for the reply guys..... Was not wanting to spend more than $500-600.  Thank you koshkin will look into those you suggested.  Mithran I do have the eotech fitted onto my AR-15 and I am very happy with it.  Was looking into something different for the SOCOM something with a little bit more reach out and touch.  Was looking at the aimpoint such as this one.

Is this one magnified?  Or am I just misinterpreting the 2X?

Yeah that one is magnified.  I've never used it but a die hard Aimpoint guy that goes buy cheaptrick on this site will probably tell you it's not that great as far as FOV and clarity goes.  I'm sure he'll see this next time he hops on here and'll make a comment about it.

Fire Fighter, welcome to The OT!!

Mithran's spot on.

As stated, horrible FOV and clarity is sub optimum, to put it mildly.

And I'm considered a Aimpoint fan.

Looks like koshkin and Mithran got your 6 on this thread......

Just a question, what kind of AR15 do you have, heavy barrel, carbine etc all the damn tricks and whistles AR's have now?  Reason I'm asking is because the AR is probably more accurate than your new toy.  I think the EoTech would be perfect for the SOCOM and a mid range scope for the AR.  Just a thought.  Not trying to drag down your new toy but from what I understand it's a 2-3 MOA weapon at most better for close quarters.  Scopes for the AR could be any one of these...

All within your price range.

Hey thanks for the input cheaptrick!

Here is a pic of the gun its a Rock River Arms.

I don't know if i am being too picky when it comes to looks over functionality, but I think the eotech doesn't look good on the SOCOM.  But if I do what Mithran suggested I will probably bite the bullet, no pun intended, and go with an ACOG for the AR15 and put the eotech on the the SOCOM.

Mithran and dilligaf are the real resident experts on these weapons as far as I'm concerned.

Mithran has used the Eotech on real world situations, so you can take his word on what gear works.

Great looking M4!! The finish looks terrific too.

Does that rifle have the Match 2 stage trigger RR offers or the single stage??

Who makes your quad rail and your BUIS??

Tell us all about it!!

We love pics!!!

Oh, I was referring to the 2x Aimpoint in my first thread too. It was too early this morning too be posting.

The M2 or new M3 are good to go, in my book.

I actually prefer the 2 moa dot to the 4 moa dot.

Hey cheaptrick

I bought this weapon at the SAXET gun show here in San Antonio TX. The package deal was $1,375.00 NIB including the eotech 512.A65.  I felt it was a good price.  Was it?  As far as the maker of the quad rail the only insignia I can find on it is a diamond shape with the letters "YHM" in it.  The trigger I believe is a single stage but really don't know the difference between the two you are talking about.  Are you refering to a national match trigger?  If so, no it doesn't.  When you refer to a BUIS, I don't know what that is.  I am really a novice about guns at the moment trying to soak eveything up like a sponge.  And I am really learning alot here at the forums with some really great and informative posts.  At the moment I really rely heavily on a freind who is an avid collecter for advice and what is good and what to stay away from.

YHM, is Yankee Hill Machine. Good stuff. I had one on my AR.

BUIS is Back Up Iron Site. This is the rear "flip up" site on your rifle. Looks like an ARMS.

I was referring to the National Match trigger. It's a 2 stage, yours is probably a single stage trigger.

Sounds like you got a great deal on that weapon.

Check out AR15.com forums. There's more information there than you can believe.

Let us know how you make out.

You give me too much credit cheaptrick but thank you.

Ar15.com is good but here's another site.  If you want good info on ballistics, reloading, hell just about anything that involves pulling a trigger and so much info it'll make you head spin, is Snipers Hide.  Most of the members over there are long range/benchrest shooters, Law Enforcement, active or former active military.  Check em out, but read everything first and if you have a question use the search function first because if you can think of it, it's probably already been aswered somewhere.

Edited to say:  Hide your credit cards from yourself before going over to the Hide.

I have used the 1x and love it because eye relief is just not a factor I first saw it on a rifle like yours but mine is on an Encore 45-70 pistol that I use some smoking hot loads in and the scope has really held up well. I also think the EOTech and the AimPoint would be nice on that rifle but no magnification. If you truely think you need lots of magnification install the mount that attaches on the side of the reciever and put a 10x Super Sniper on it.  The forward mount rail system is for close combat not distance. I think you are trying to attach at the wrong mounting point if you want magnification. But then the lack of a proper cheekpiece is a problem. McMillan is making a very nice M1a stock that corrects this but it's for sniper rifles not the close quarters gun you are setting up.
