I just had this scope brought to my attention today. I haven't considered Leupold in a long time. Either unimpressive scopes or grossly over-priced (or both). Anyway, the reason I'm considering this vs. an SS 3-9 is the 4 oz. lighter weight. They both have their pluses and minuses.

The Patrol also has illum, which is rarely useful to me, but I might be able to use it a pig hunting trip sometime. I'd prefer FFP, but don't mind SFP on a scope with 10X or less on the high end. This is also going on a rifle that has an effective range of 300 yards so while I might dial in 1.5 mils I'm not likely to get lost on a turret with no revolution marks.

On the other hand, I like the turrets on the SS 3-9. I know it's a very dependable scope. The glass is really good.

I imagine it's darn near a wash.

I have used both and like both for seperate reasons.  For a target gun that won't be primary for hunting the SS gets my vote.   For a rig who's primary mission is hunting I like the Patrol a dad better for some of the reasons you mentioned, like.
-SFP reticles unlike "some" FFP reticles are easier to see throughout the power range
-Illumination will come in handy on dark game in low light.  As fine as the illumination is on the patrol, you'll use it more than you think
-more compact design, turret height, weight

Don't get me wrong, I love the SS and actually sold the original Patrol I had and kept the SS simply due to I have 1 main hunting rig and others are more target play.  The patrol was a good scope and I liked it.  I have since bought another patrol and put up as I have intentions to put it on a fast twist 223AI once I get it built.

I think I'll stick with the SS 3-9. It's a scope I really like. I've read some negative comments on the TMR reticle, for one thing, and I know I can do well shooting with the quad reticle.

Glass is better on the SS. I do really like the VX-R on my truck gun though.
If at first you don't secede...try..try again.
