Someone suggested I do a static test on the scope I have tested so far. I clamped the rifle in a steady device and set a target up at 100m. The rifle was then moved about until the scoped showed the zero point, which was marked on the target. (Actually a similiar target in a clipboard next to me!) I then dialed the dials about, first down, then back up, then left, then up, then right, then back down.

On static test one the adjustment seems to creep by a 1/4 inch per inch from the 8th click onwards on the up or down setting. Left and right held pretty well. The scope returned 100% back to zero every time.

On static test no 2 the box at the bottom right behaved very well on the 12 clicks. The box on the top right again shows the 1/4 inch creep. Again the scope returned 100% to zero every time.

Finally I shot with the rifle, without adjusting the scope from above zero. My rifle grouped pretty neatly and shows the zero held through all the dialling about.

The scope, on a static test, behaved better then on the shooting test in my opinion.

The static test should be better. The tension fingers, or springs in some cases, that hold the insides against the pivots are not as stressed as much as when actual testing and firing occurs. If you were to leave the scope for several days in one of the extreme positions for several days, you result would, again be different. (as mike mcdonald has pointed out in a previous test-- under no circumstances perform this test in the presence of armadillos).

Thanks Dale!

We only have porcupines this side. Are they safe enough for this test??
