Leupold速 Wind River速 Cascade Series Binoculars - 10X42

Has anyone tried these or have any experience with Leupold (good or bad).  I am looking for a good pair of hunting binos at around the $300 range, and these seem to fit the bill.  I especially like the center lock on the diopter.  Please let me know your thoughts, or if you feel there is a better value for the $$$.  Thanks

These are basically comparable to:
Bushnell Legend
Nikon Monarch
Pentax DCF WP II
and others of the same ilk.

For the money you get a pretty decent glass.  If you're not really an "optics guy," they would quite probably prove satisfactory for a long time to come.

I own a pair of the Pinnacle 10x42's, used for gun hunting and a pair of Katmai 8x32 for bowhunting.  Really like both sets.  I have owned Leica and Zeiss Victory binos as well as Swaro EL & SLC models and for the money, IMO, the Leupolds are a great value.  I can't comment on the Cascade series, but I would keep an eye on Ebay, you should be able to pick up the Pinnacles for what you want to spend and they are a step up from the Cascade series.  Most of my glassing is from the stand and in 2 years of using both models they have done very well.  As with scopes, not nearly as bright as the Euro glass, but both models I have are very well suited for "legal hunting hours" use.

Hi,

I had a pair of these and there isnt an  individual right eye diopter setting. Good glass though. I sold them and purchased the olympics by wind river.  I would buy the Leupold Olympics 8x42 roof prism. Much better than cascades with seperate diopter  for around $329 or less. Check with SWFA website. Good luck.

According to the Leupold catalog the diopter setting for the Cascades is part of the center focus mechanism.

Antleraddiction, you say you have a pair of Pinnacles, have you had or compared them to Niko monarch atb. Are the worth the extra money or are they about the same optically?

This is simply not possible as all Leupold (central focussing) binoculars have this feature.

As Bird Watcher mentioned, this may be an additional wheel located just below the focussing wheel (a system that seems to be gaining in popularity amongst many makers) rather than on the traditional right optical barrel behind the eyepiece but, it IS there.

Dave,

Sorry, I've never owned any Nikon binos or even looked through any.  I'm pretty rough on binos for some reason and that is why I got rid of my high end binos, too much money to worry about taking in the woods.  The Pinnacles are really good for the money, I own the 10x42 and they are a tad heavy but very stable for viewing.  Glass is really good for a $375.00 bino, IMO.  Sorry, wish I could have been of more help.
