I have narrowed my choices down to a 3-9x40 Leupold VX-I or a Nikon Buckmaster.  Between these two, which one would be the better choice?  I am especially interested in the scope being able to hold it's zero and image clarity.  The scope is going to be mounted on a 45/70 for short range deer hunting.  I know some may say that you don't need a 3-9 on a 45/70 rifle, but I want to have the option of being able to swap it out to one of my other rifles in the future if I ever see the need.

I have a Buckmaster 3-9X40 and I picked it over a Varix-II -which is called the VX-I now.  Also, they have updated the Buckmaster since I bought mine, so for me its an easy choice -Buckmaster!  I've never had any issues with it.  It was mounted on my BAR 30-06 for several years, which is my main deer rifle and now its on my kids deer rifle.

I would take the Buckmaster personally. But for the money, if you can live with the BDC reticle, I would put a Nikon Team Primos on it. It will supply a bit better glass. Just throwing things out. I don't know how you feel about that BDC. Some like it, some don't. Some just ignore it, and use it like a duplex.

The Buckmaster is brighter but the VXI Leupold would give you better customer service. For what it cost to buy a Buckmaster or VXI.The Sightron SII is a better scope and cost around  $200.00US.
