Anyone think I am on the wrong track here?  VX III 4.5-14 40mm with the varmint hunters reticle in leupold high rings and 2 piece mount for a Remington 700 LTR .223 to be used primarily for prairie dogs?  I don't want to spend more, but am certainly willing to spend less.  Other option might be Burris SS 4-16x44 ballistic plex or mildot.  Burris is about same price as Bushnell 4200 and it seems like it might be a little better??? Don't own either one, and never have, so maybe I'm wrong here.

Anyy suggestions welcome.

Am I right that I would need high rings for either scope?

Opinions will vary but- the burris and 4200 are not the scope as the vx-111, I have a conquest in 4.5x14 and it's not as good a scope as the vx. optically or construction. (plastic adjustment knobs, yet). and the click stops are not as positive as vx. the 4200 is longer a little heavier and- no Rainguard is not going to mean kaka. Tell you what , buy the leo and I'll trade you out. Ring height depends on base heights. As you are just starting this project do not select the good old Redfield windage types. On your gun standard bases would use med. rings, but if you choose a Weaver type you can go with high bases and low rings. This is the set up I prefer (or Warne or Talley). It doesn't make the set up look as if the scope is setting on "posts". The bell should rest as close to the barrel as possible and frankly this usually takes a drawer full of rings to try, or a very patient sporting goods clerk.

Thanks for the input.  I think I will stick with Leupold.

I doubt I will find the patient clerk or get access to the whole drawer of rings, so I may just have to take my best shot at picking them myself.  I am thinking of using Leupold dovetail (I like the looks, even though I don't need the strength) base-LEU 50042 and rings-LEU49916.

I don't suppose anyone has tried this setup and can comment??

JD,

Did you end up getting the VXIII?

I am a fan of the VXIII and plan on purchasing another for a .223 Model 700 VS SF II.

What sort of reticles did you choose?  I know Leupold has a dozen or so.

PD  ??????  police department?  prarie dogs?

the varmit reticle 4.5-14 VXIII is good and for either but I really like the ability to easily dial in correction for windage and elevation.  Look at this you are almost there price wise.

P.S.   Make sure you buy one with the 30mm tube it has 100 MOA adjustment range and side focus.
