Scoping a 22-250 (rem VS-SF II) -- is the Leupold VXIII (with varmit or BC reticle) really worth the extra $$ over the Nikon (new monarch 4.5x16x42 with BDC) ?? the reticles on the Leupold seem very faint and the BDC reticle seems very heavy. From a clarity perspective I can't see any difference (maybe it's my eyes).

Thoughts??

Thanks!

Welcome to the OT.

Well, it's kinda tuff to choose between the two because the new Monarch hasn't been released yet, my friend.

Wish I could say I have.

That said, the VXIII with the VH reticle has gotten rave reviews here on Optics Talk by several prominent members.

personally i take the nikon every time, ask me that same question 10 yrs ago i would have said i didnt know anybody else but leupold made a rifle scope, your paying for a lot of name with the gold ring, nikon is what it is, which isnt a bad scope for the money i only own two scopes that arent nikon one old school varixII 3x9 and a burris ffII and the monarch imo is the best scope i own, of course if i could afford a better scope i would buy a kahles or a zeiss or a swaro. the bushnell elite 4200 isnt a bad choice either.

Thanks guys- Guess there is about a 50/50 opinion on Leupold vs Nikon. I too have several Leupolds, but this Nikon seems to be very competitive. I think I'm going to try the "New" Nikon with side focus and BDC. I'll let you know how it works out. I also looked at Sightron, Burris, and Conquest. Sightron looks really good, but I can't get myself to commit.

Good to have choices !!

and it sounds to me like your not going to buy a junky scope based on your list above, i guess see what the ole eyes find attractive and go from there.

Yea-- after even looking at Swarvski (which I would not be able to afford) I really can't see much difference. Should be mounted (the scope that is ) and ready to go when I get back to Idaho  week after next. I'll get sighted in and send in a debrief.

Thanks for the input !!

Thanks for the responses. Had a tough time finding the Nikon and after MUCH discussion with both the factory reps and a local shop, I went with a Bushnell Elite 4200 Tactical 6X24. Placed side by side with Nikon Monarchs and  Leupold VXIII, the claity does seem to be at least as good (if not slightly better). Edge to edge picture is very clear. The reticle on the Leupold (varmit and BC)seems to be a little too fine for me -- would be tough to use in low light. (I will probably use the 22-250 for other than just rock chucks and prairrie dogs on sunny days). The BDC on the Nikon seems very heavy (maybe I'm just too used to a duplex with the fine cross hairs in the middle), although I've been told by several folks (includiong some who attended a factory test shoot) that it is surprisingly close when calibrated for longer ranges.

Long story short, I went with the Bushnell (after much research and going back and forth). $ for $ seems to be a solid, well thought out piece with great optics. It's not quite as long as the others, so it looks really good and seems to balance well on the rifle. The mil dots give quite a bit of flexibility (but will take serious bench time to get used to). I was able to pick it up locally for just over $500.

Will post again after I've had a chance to work with it on the bench and in the field.

Rod
