Hello, I'm new to the forum, but have been lurking around for a while trying to learn as much as possible before buying my first set of decent binoculars. I'm not unfamiliar with decent glass, but haven't been able to afford any for myself until now.

I'm looking for a pair of 10x42s and have pretty much narrowed it down to either the Leupold McKinley, Vortex Viper, or Zen Ray Prime. Recently I had the opportunity to compare the old McKinleys and the Vipers. I thought the McKinleys were slightly sharper at the edges, but I preferred the eye cups on the Vipers. Unfortunately I haven't had a chance to look through any Zen Ray optics whatsoever.

So my question is for anyone with experience with all three binos mentioned above. Given that I probably won't get a chance to look through either the Primes or the new McKinleys before I buy, if in my position where would you send your money? Would you wait for the new McKinleys, give the Primes a shot, or go with what is the local favorite around here Vortex?

Thank you for any input,

Bill

I would go with the McKinley or Viper for the excellent CS if something goes south.  The McKinley is wider, but if your face likes the eyecups of the Vipers that is certainly worth consideration.

Both are quite good optically in their price range.

Welcome to the OT!

Thank you for the welcome and your input.I agree with you on the customer service, I've had good luck with Leupold in the past.
I'm leaning toward the McKinleys right now, but I'm kinda wondering when the new model is going to show up. Anyone here on OT had the chance to look at them yet?
