I have been told to not get a side focus Leupold because the side focus turret(dial) gets very sloppy. I thought maybe in the cheaper models but not in a VX-3. Any reports on this.
Thanks!

No problem with mine.  Leupold will fix it if it has problems.

Ant, I've heard the Leupold side focus had a bit of backlash.  Recent models I've used didn't seem to exhibit this issue.  I asked Leupold about it, and they confirmed they did have a problem, but that it's been fixed in recent scopes.

So is there any advantage over a side focus then on the front of scope? eg VX-3 6.5-20*40 EFP or 6.5-20*50?

My scope side focus does have backlash, or tends to go out of focus, but it is not a big deal.
The only advantage for a side focus is ease of use.
In actual design terms I would say that the front focus or objective lens focus is better in that it has less moving parts.
The front focus moves the objective lens, whilst the side focus moves the focussing lens.

- A side parallax adjustment allows a shooter to eliminate parallax with a minimal amount of movement required. This configuration is safer for military marksmen and faster and more comfortable for competitive shooters engaging targets at varying distances.
- An AO allows less lens elements to be used in the optical design. This provides a scope that is less expensive to produce and has less air to glass surfaces inside that reflect or absorb available light.
