My wife just bought me this spotter for fathers day.  I have seen some negative remarks about this model on here.  I would like to know what people think. First, Is it a good spotter for the money like the salesman told my wife or is it not.  If it is not, what would be a good scope in the same price range?  Second I was thinking about getting a scope with 60x.  Is it worth getting for hunting or will heat waves just distort. Thank, MontanaElk

Best $300-$400 scope is Kowa TSN 601/602 with 20x WA or 25x LER eyepiece. Shop around, prices vary.

No, that Leupold is not good for the price.

60x will not work on an inexpensive scope, and it works on the $2000 scopes only on bright days without humidity and dust. It's not what you want for hunting and shooting.

If you can, get a fixed power eyepiece, inexpensive zooms are baaaaad.

anweis,

Why is the Leupold not good for the money?  It looks to me like the Kowa you recommend is about $560 with an eyepiece.  That's twice as much.

I used one of the 20-60X80 Wind River models and it was good; expecially at 20X.  I think they made some improvements in the 80mm model over the 60mm.

Because i have the feeling that inexpensive Leupold products have lax quality control when they leave the factory.

I have seen about 5 of those 60mm scopes and none were the same, from soft focus to stiff focus, from various optical defects to others. Some even seemed brighter than others.

I've seen several scopes in that price range that seemed better.

You are right about the Kowa being more than $300. I don't want to sound arrogant, but I am too poor and work too hard to waste my money on poor quality. Speaking of working hard, Leupold should do that too.
