Howdy all. New to the forum, looks like a great community here.  Thought ya'll might be able to offer some insight.

I'm going to be coming into possession of a 700P that's got a Leupy Vari-X III 4.5x14x40 scope on it.  It's got the adjustable optic and appears to be model # 61125 (according to SWFA).  Is attached with a Leupold quick release base and rings (1" I believe).

I'm pretty confident I don't really want this glass.  I think I'd rather swap it out for a 10x SS or similar.  I've been sniffing around for the average resale value of this particular scope.  Looks to be around $400-450.  Maybe a little extra with the base and rings.

Is that about what you guys think is the going rate?  I'm fairly new to the long-range world, so I'm kind of feeling my way around in the dark still.  I'm just trying to get enough to finance the SS and whatever mounting combo I decide on.

Secondarily, do you think I'd be doing myself a disservice by getting rid of the Leupold for the Super Sniper?

Thanks.

The vari x III is an old model its worth is probably more like $300/$350 ? if you are to use the gun for target/long range work get the super sniper.

+1  Unless you need to sell to get what you want, you might consider keeping it. Unless there is something wrong with it, it would make a good back up on another rifle. Just a thought. Welcome to the OT.

Leupolds generally sell as a used scope more than I would pay for a new one.  That's why I buy used Weavers.   Tens of thousands of dead deer can't be all wrong.    Light It Up

Poker   Take the scope you have call the Leupold custom shop and talk to them about adding target knobs (the tall covered ones) to it or M1 tactical knobs (the exposed ones).  The 4.5-14x40 Leupold VXIII is a very useable scope for anything you likely would want to do.  To begin with in low light you have the option to dial the power down to around 6x or lower to brighen up the scope. In low light with ar 40mm objective 6x is a lot brighter than 10x.  The other factor is that if you ever decide to use the rifle for anything other than target work you can dial the power down to 4.5x and actually be able to get on target stalking game.  Much game has been taken with a 4x scope. On the other end of the scale 14.5x is almost half again what a 10x is.  I have two of the super snipers and I like them but a hunting scope they are not unless you are talking out past 100 yds not that they dont focus down but because you cant rapidly acquire a walking deer at 60 yds with a 10x scope, given enough time you can get on it but its awkward.

Anything that is quick release and doesnt say La Rue, GG&G,  or ARMS is suspect and La Rue is the best fo the pack.  While Badger Ordnance rings and base are the best tactical set up Warne rings and bases are quite useable.

Stick to your Vari xIII.More usable than a straight 10 power.I have that same rifle and feel that the Leupold is a little better in clarity.

Great advice on sending it to Leupold to get target knobs put on.  The M3 knobs are the ones I like.  The M1 knobs are decent also just taller.  They can also change out your reticle to a mil dot if you'd like also.  What you will end up with will be equivalent to a mark 4 from a few years back, still a very capable scope.

I think the SS would be ok for target only, but I agree that they would make a terrible hunting scope being a fixed power at 10x

One of the great features of Leupold is resale value and the ability to sell it.
