I recently bought one of the new RXII rangefinders from Leupold and noticed something odd. For the first couple of days it struggled to range even relatively close objects (for example could not get a reading off my neighbours house at about 250 yards), but now it is working perfectly (got a reading off the same house from farther away at 764 yards yesterday)

Is this normal with a new rangefinder? Would it have been down to the atmospheric conditions at the time maybe? I don't think there was any difference in the conditions on the days. Has anybody else come across this before?

I am not familiar with the RXII, but, this may help with your question:  I just purchased the Leupold Wind River Binocular RB800C.  It is a combination unit of binocular, laser rangefinder and digital compass.  Probably not at all in the same class as your RXII, but what I have noticed is that the control buttons seem slow to function.  By that I mean if I want to range something fast, I put the crosshair on target and press the range button, it seems to take a few micro-seconds or whatever longer than I would think it needed to do its thing.

Atmospheric conditions do play havic on lasers.  Visible and invisible humidity, dust and any other particulates in between you and your target can give a laser fits.

I am a retired Apache Pilot and am very familiar with laser rangefinders and laser designators.  So far I think these hand held units are pretty cool.  My combo unit seems accurate, and repeats exactly yardage of objects I have lased from my back yard every time.  The compass function seem accurate and even has the ability to adjust the declination if known.

Hope this helped.  Good luck.

I think it has a lot to do with the sophistication and complexity of the models. Had a simple Nikon before that was so fast--- Recently got an RXlll and takes a long time on the firing solution. But then it's calculating the distance feeding that into ballistic calculator, filtering for atmospheric stuff (rain) and then giving me back MOA holdover. Pretty damn amazing.

That sounds about right, now that i've had more time to get used to using it. How big is the RX-III? The RX-II is very compact, easily held in one hand for ranging and then back in the trousers pocket. Couldn't be happier with it, considering the low price.
