Hey Everyone,

I have been lurking for a while and decided to register and ask my question.  It is a spotting scope question but the rifle scope page gets so much more play than any other I thought I would ask on here...hope thats OK.

My question has to do with the 12-40x60 Leupold Mark 4 Tactical Spotter.  I really like the unit but it seems pretty spendy, are there substitutes that I could get that wouldn't hurt my wallet so much?  If not, why is this thing better than a thousand dollar Zeiss spotter (not withstanding the compact-ness and ranging reticle)?

I would appreciate any feedback from users or anyone that knows anything about this unit.

Thanks...shoot straight

At what distance will you use it and how small a bullet hole do you need to see?

I dont think there is any spotter that will discern 30 cal holes at 500. That's why there are spotters (men) in the pits on military ranges. I would look on Ebay at Nikon, Bausch & Lomb, Redfield.
You can probably find a used or NOS discontinued model for under $500 that will pick out 30 cal out to 300.

I understand that I can save some money but I really like the size of the Leupold and I cant find any other company that makes that size.  I'm really into long range varminting so I probably wont need it to look at bullet holes on the range to much, more for humping out into a field and shootin' cyotes.  I appreciate all the response so far...anyone acutally look through one of these, I can't find a reatailer that has them.

If you really like long range observation I would recomend you to a bigger spotting scope, 70-80 mm frontlens instead. That is both good for lower light situations and it also gives you a generally brighter picture.

There is no way any leupold can compare with Zeiss, Swarovski or Leica spotting scopes.

And the best is supposed to be Swarovski STS 80 HD.

Leupold makes extremely durable strong items that can takes a lot of pounding, but when it comes to typical optical issues like brightness, FOV, sharpness, low light capabilitys they are 50 years behind.

50 years?? So a 1950 Euro whatever is as good as a VII?
I think you overstate just a mite. Zeiss, Swarovski or Leica are also a tad more $ than the Loopie. (and probably 1/2 the difference is exchange rate driven rather than quantitative optical superiority.)

Yes exactly the High end Euro stuff cost a Tad more than the loopie does and there is good reason for it.

And regardless of make, 60mm frontlens to 40-60X is on the low end.....

A 1950 Euro whatsoever is not better than a loopie, but a Hensoldt Diasta 8x52 is a good example on a 50 year old scope that is at least lightvise and most likely also FOV a lot better than a loopie.

Regards Technika
