    Posted: September/18/2007 at 18:45

I'm a new member and just found this forum and think it's great - lots of good info. I searched the archives, but did not find anything matching my problem, so I'm hoping someone can help.  I just purchased a set of Leupold PRW rings for a Remington 11-87 cantilever mount shotgun.  I measured the cross slot lug in the rings to be .110" high for one ring and .115" high for the other ring. (it varied per ring), but the cantilever base on the shotgun has cross slots .096" deep.  (All of the cross slot lugs on the gun measured an exact .096" deep).  My question is - should the base of the rings seat firmly (touch) the cantilever mount, or is the cross slot supposed to keep the ring base from coming into contact?  I was ready to file the cross slot lugs in the rings to allow them to sit flat, but thought it best to seek some advice before going to far.  It just does not seem right that the rings would not seat firmly on the cantilever base.    Any help is appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

unscrew the side having one and remove the cross-slot, put the ring on the cantilever, this is the proper fit, now adjust the slot lug such that this happens, when the lugs are reinstalled, also they may drop "back in" when you loosen this bolt and retighten it.

I tried removing the side (and the single lug screw) but the lugs seem to be pressed in.  This is the first time I've used these rings, so I"m being a bit cautions, not wanting to be too aggressive for fear I'll damage something.  I guess I need to "pry" the lug loose.  I'll try that and see what happens.........

Thanks for the reply

I believe the V grooves in the side of the rings are what positions the rings both in height and cross directions.
In the pic on the Leupold web site, it looks like there is a set screw in one side which I believe is what holds the cross lugs in the rings.

unscrew the side having one and remove the cross-slot--usually they just fall out.

I did get one of the lugs out and unfortunately, the rings still do not seat firmly on the cantilever base.  Even when torqued down, there is a gap. At this point, I'm a bit disappointed in the Leupold rings - to me, the gap translates into potential inaccuracy.  After all, there's no guarantee that both rings would have the same gap.  Even with lapping (which I intended to do), I'm concerned that elevation would be off.  I have many other "standard" rings from Leupold and never had a problem.  I'll just look for another ring for the cantilever base - any suggestions???

Thanks

got lots of PRW and QRW never had a problem--I think the angle on the cantilver is off making the rings "ride" higher, is it the cantilever barrel from remington or aftermarket?

It's a factory barrel.  The cantilever looks large, but I'm not too familiar with them.  I've hunted with a rifle for 20+ years.  This is my first shotgun and first time hunting with a shotgun, so I'm not sure what to expect.  A friend of mine has the 870 cantilever - I visually inspected his gun and the cantilever appears the same.  (He has a "cheap" set of aluminum rings - something I'd like to avoid).  Maybe I'm expecting too much from a shotgun - I know it's not a rifle, but I'm just a bit particular about the "details".  I would go with a set of Burris signature rings, but they don't make them (with inserts) in low height.  Any medium ring puts the scope a bit too high to feel comfortable.  I may have to go with the Burris and add a stock comb pad.  I wanted to keep the ring height to no more than .230".
