Hi all, I'm new here.  Did some forum searches and couldn't find exaclty what I'm looking for.. Been around on some other forums, and was recommended over here as well.  Anyway, looking for an honest opinion which to pick from on two similarly priced scopes.

1) Leupold Mark 4 4.5-14x50 Front Focal Plane TMR Reticle
2) Nightforce NXS 3.5-15-50 NP-R1

I'm not concerned about reticle really, just the overall quality of glass, etc between the two.  I know that one is FFP, and I've never had one before, so anyone w/ experience here is helpful.  The NF is illuminated, and I honestly don't think I'll use it often.  This is going on an accurized 223 for primarily varmint hunting and target punching.

Thanks!

Glass in NF will be better.

Build quality in NF will be better.

The difficulty of FFP, especially for hunting, is that the reticle can get really small at low power.

If you are not planning to range or adjust fire with the reticle, FFP is unnecessary, in my opinion.

I've owned both, used both, broke Mark 4 (back in the days when it was a Mk 4 Ultra.)  I'd get the NF.

sort of comparing apples and oranges comparing an sfp with an ffp, if you compare the ffp nsx 3.5x15 it would make more sense, however the ffp nxs runs about 2200 as the leo about 1600, the nxs only comes with mildot, the leo mil, or tmr. it is alot easier to use a ffp when using hold off for wind drift at different magnifications, as the subtension has to be tested with each power you are using for sfp and a scribe mark put on the scope if you plan on doing it alot. The leos have a slight tunnel effect on the lowest power with visible coke bottle on panning. A disappoint is leos not using their better glass in the mk4 series , (use the older index matched) instead of the new model stuff. I guess to keep the price down, however with the competition in better tactical scopes this is really dumb.

Yeah, I am hoping the top glass will show up in the Mark 4.

The glass in the Nightforces isn't as good as some people would like to believe, but it is pretty good.

I agree, glass doesn't sell NF scopes, but the glass ain't bad.  And the rest is superb - which is what sells NF scopes.

Exactly. When you buy a Nightforce you're especially looking for ruggedness and precision adjustments. Their glass is more than up to the job, but somewhat secondary to other features.

I do think the Nightforce selection of reticles is a big plus.  I dont like that the whole back end turns when you change power but the height of the knobs on the Nightforce is much better than the M1 knobs.
