Hello, new here and enjoying the info as well as the deals offered by SWFA.

I recently had a problem with a Leupold VX-II 3-9x40.  Mounted in Warne rings (which were not over-tight), during the course of a year the scope magnification dial became impossible to turn.  When first mounted, no problem.  But when the weather grew warm the dial completely seized and pretty much stayed that way at all temperatures afterwards.  When I substantially loosened the rear scope ring, the mag dial worked fine.  When I removed the Leupold, it had NO damage at all, no scope marks, nothing.  I got rid of the scope and replaced it with one of the Burris models on sale here (which also has noticeably better glass).

I've owned many rifles over the years and several Leupold scopes, and have a fair level of civilian and military shooting experience.  But I have never seen anything like this and was wondering if anyone has experienced a similar problem? Was the scope tube too thin or weak?

Just curious?  did you use a torque wrench and what was it set to?

Sounds like a "pressure" problem, either the rings were over tight or the rings are out of alignment.

I would have tried a set of Burris self aligning rings! I saw this problem with a buddy's Leupold that he turned in  the front ring (Redfield type) with the scope! I loosened the rear windage screw, then turned the scope back and forth a few times with a wrench on the ring--End of problem.

The rings were set to correct torque (don't remember wrench setting but it was appropriate).  Rings were not out of alignment, no lapping necessary.  Scope was in good condition; not a mark on it when I replaced it. Problem only went away when I drastically loosened the rear ring--basically, only the front ring was holding the scope.  Before the problem developed, I shot probably 100 rounds through the rifle (Rem 700 in 308); it shot very accurately and it harvested a couple deer.

I have since mounted another scope with the same rings and everything is fine.  The only thing I can think of is that something was wrong with the scope.  It seemed like the tube was weak or "thin" and a normal scope mount impeded the magnification system from moving back and forth???

I'd send the scope to leupold, they have full lifetime warranty and great customer service.
