I recently sent my Vari-X III in for target turrets, recieved it back in two weeks with turrets installed, new objective lense, ready to mount and zero. I'm testing the elevation, only to find 12" of elevation, out of one turn of my turret! Leupold sent me a return service label to fix it, but has anyone heard of this? The target turret and the old coin slot adjuster both are marked 15" The testing was performed at a measured 100 yards.

Since I'm new here and cant edit my postLoco

I just wanted to add that my return to zero was horrible! I shot 8 rounds dialing from 0 to 15 after each shot, and my spread ranged from 10 7/8" to 12 7/8". My groups were 1 1/2" on top and bottom. I did shoot a 3rd group, without touching the turrets, and they were all in triangle touching each other. Could the new adjusters need breaking in? Could the erector system be sticking, or not going to full travel?

How did you go about tightening the screws when mounting the scope?

Sounds like you possibly have over tightened your rings. I would loosen them and re tighten them with a torque wrench. Depending on your rings they should be tightened to 15 to 25 in lbs. Yes that is inch pounds not ft lbs and that is not very tight. And I have some rings that specify 15 in lbs and some that specify 25 in lbs. If you over tighten your rings that could cause the erector to bind and not adjust properly. Also when you loosen your rings I would inspect your scope to make sure you did not damage the scope. For a torque wrench I would look at a Wheeler at your local gun shop. They can be had for around $50.

My torque wrench goes down to 30 in/lbs, and my ring screws broke free before it clicked. The spec on them is 28 in/lbs. The scope is back at Leupold, but know the tube is not damaged, not a ring mark on it either.

28 in/lbs is a little more than snug.
Mounting scopes here at the shop we always stay around 20 in/lbs.
You also have to pay attention to scope wall thickness.
You can torque an SS to much and not have a problem but a thinner walled scope such as an older Leupold may not handle it so well.
If you have rings that are just a little out of spec and you torqued them the 28 in/lbs, that very well could have been your problem.
99.8% of people say its the scope and not the mounts and 99.8% of the time it is the mounts not the scope.

Just curious, what brand of rings were you using? I have never heard of specs that are 28 in-lbs. I generally see specs of 15, 20 or 25 in-lbs.

And let us know how things turn out for you.

Leupold rings with 8-40 screws, says in the dirrections 28 in lbs is max torque value. What I'm saying is my 30 in lb setting, backed them off without clicking. I have a pretty good feel for torque rebuilding transmissions for a living.

I will definately let you know what they find. The guy in service thinks they installed the wrong adjuster screw, but who knows. I have installed a few scopes in my days, and would be very supprised if I got one that messed up. If I did, we will soon find outBig Grin

Leupold informed me they replaced the entire erector system for elevation and windage, should be shipping back anyday! They are very busy and understaffed, so a bit slow on repairs, just as long as its right this time is all that matters to me...

Will retest, post updates very soonSmile
