deer hunting / target/ defense on a dpms ar-10. leupold 1.5-5 vxiii or valdada 1.1-4x26 crt. a good all around scope . considering hunting would be in new york(closer range). which scope is more suitable.

Both are good scopes, but IOR has better glass.  Leupold has better customer service.  IOR has a reticle that is more suitable for fast acquisition shots.  I think IOR is also a bit more expensive.

It all comes down to what is more important to you.  If you can afford it, IOR is a better scope, but VXIII is a solid and very well supported choice for less money.  As an alternative, consider a Burris Signature Safari 1.75-5x32.  I consider it a better alternative to Leupold.  Besides, it is available with a FastPlex reticle which can be helpful when a quick shot in less than perfect light has to be made. Cheaper than Leupold too.

i can have just as good a scope or better, with the burris as i would with the leupold? money is an issue. when the reticle is not lit is it black when power is off or is the reticle's center non-existing in the off position

The reticle is black when power is off (including the center).

When money is an issue, IMO, Leupold is seldom the scope to go to.  Leupold collects a healthy premium for their warranty and name recognition.  It seems like you'll be better served with Burris Signature Safari.
